Amanda Moreno (Escalon) talks
about running and college choice -
Sac Joaquin Section star
March, 2006
Amanda Moreno was second in the state track meet last
June in the 3200, was the Sac Joaquin Section champ along the way,
and this fall was second in the Section Div IV cross-country race to
Maritza Garcia (Riverbank) and was third in the State meet. When
we interviewed her at Stanford in late September she indicated she
had some slight knee problems, which she indicates below weres a factor
in the last harrier season. As she heads into her senior track
season she has made a college choice, which she indicates below, with
Amanda
one of a number of very, very talented girl distance runners statewide
this spring!!
Doug Speck
1) How has preparation for track been going? (weather, etc. much effect,
how's the general health, etc.)
Well, training hasn't been going as well as I would like. Little
things keep coming up like getting sick, shin splints, my knee, asthma,
and
a car accident. In between those things I have been able to get in
some good workouts and my times in practice are better than last
year. So hopefully all the bad things have passed and I will be able
to have
consistent workouts from now on.
2) What were your personal feelings about the cross-country season
past (do as expected, better, not as good or--------------?
I was not happy with my cross-country season. I did not get in a
very good base because of tendonitis in my knee, so I don't think
my endurance
was as good as it should have been. Overall I do not think reached
my full potential. I can't be too upset, I did do better than last
year which was a goal of mine.
3) What are your thoughts on the current group of California prep female
distance runners?
OUTSTANDING! They are all very talented and hard working girls. I
have respect for all of them. I think this will be a fun and exciting
season.
I can't wait until the competition begins.
4) What are some of your goals for the spring season?
First I would like to get healthy. After I do that I would like to
get my 3200 time down to at least 10:28. I would also like to race
more 1600s to break 5:00. It is so weird, I have not seriously competed
in the 1600 since my sophomore year and I never broke 5, so I would
like to do that before I graduate. Overall I just want to do my best.
5) Will you approach this track season differently than maybe the last
year or two for any reason? if so why------------
No. Every year I just go out and do my best, that is what I will
keep doing.
6) What were you looking for in a college to continue on at?
Good coaching staff, school, running trails, and my major.
7) Reasons behind the choice of University of Nevada/Reno?
The main reason is probably Coach Elias. I thought the relationship
with my coach would be the most important. Coach Elias is such a
positive person and I get along with him so well. He has a lot of
knowledge
and I feel I will be able to succeed with him. I was also looking
for a school with interior design, and fortunately Nevada was one
of the
few that had it. The team was also great and that is very important
because they will be like my family for the next four or five years.
It was a long process and I am so happy with my choice and that it
is over.
