College Park (Pleasant Hill, NCS) coach Chuck Woolridge drew rave reviews from the crowd
of 111 registrants for this summer's final clinic. Woolridge, whose team finished ranked 5th
in the U.S. last year, will be strong again in 2004 -- and they have 90 freshmen out this summer!

Adam Nelson and ex-UCLA star John Godina qualify for Finals MSP in Athens! Nelson then claimed
silver medal on second-best throw as his best effort (21.16m, or 69'-05.25") matched the Ukraine's Bilonog Yuriy who had 21.15 on final toss to back it up! Nelson with five fouls/passes (including estimated foul at
21.50 on final attempt). Godina missed advancing for final 3 puts after two fouls and a 20.16m effort.

Results and Summary of Day - good summary of the Shot Put Finals

Adam Nelson - "I really thought this would be my day and my year. The competition site and venue was just the kind of place I enjoy competing in. I just didn't perform well today. I couldn't get my competitive rhythm. I was lucky enough to finish second. My hat's off to Yuriy (gold medalist Bilonog) and the other guys who competed hard. They were solid the entire competition. I just didn't follow up. "The circle was great. There were no complaints. The only person to blame is myself. I went out there and lost the competition. That's how it goes sometimes. "It's hard to lose. I didn't throw well today. There was always something happening with me. The second throw I lost the shot off my neck. The third throw I got distracted just as I was starting to throw and I started to slip. That is not acceptable at this level and if you do that you aren't going to win. You have to respond when the competition comes back. I didn't have that today and that's a big disappointment. "The Olympic spirit really lives long here. It is probably the greatest place I have ever competed."

John Godina - "I really do not understand what happened today. I warmed up throwing 22.50's in the other ring. I really though I had made the final. Then they told me I was out. I should have won it. I screwed up. I'll definitely be back for another Olympics."

Torri Edwards loses appeal to World-Wide Sports Governing Body and Olympic team sport (ex-Pomona HS and USC sprinter took glucose at meet in Martinique that was purchased by her trainer that contained a banned substance, nikethamide. A leaflet in the product (in French) indicates the product contained the banned product and that it would result in a positive test in anti-coping control)

Report - (report excerpt) - "The leaflet specifically draws attention to its composition containing more than glucose. The leaflet states that the composition is : "Composition quantitative : Nicéthamide 125.00mg glucose monohydrate 1500,00mg Pour un comprimé de 4,5 g." 5.10 In addition, the leaflet draws attention to those involved in sport in the following way : "Sportifs : attention, cette spécialité contient un principe actif pouvant induire une réaction positive des tests ratiqués lors de contrôles antidopage." (The Panel's free translation : "Athletes : Caution, this product contains an active principle which can result in a positive test in case of an anti-doping control.")"
