Girls

Winter Park, FL- Raines is heavily favored to repeat their 2008 team championship. Their projected 88 points is nearly 40+ point better than the next team, Archbishop McCArthy (37.75). The Vikings are led by the tandem of Sonnisha Williams and Brianna Frazier who account for 51 of their points. Lake Wales super soph, Octavious Freeman should be the highlight of the meet on the heels of a 11.40, 23.66 performance at regions. Girls Long Jump

2A State Best- 19-09.75  - Sonnisha Williams Raines (Jacksonville, FL)

State Leader- 19-09.75- Sonnisha Williams Raines (Jacksonville, FL)

Williams ( Sr, Raines, Jacksonville, FL) has been flirting with the 20’ barrier this season. Her 19-09.75 best (US#5) at region shows she’s capable. She’ll be shuttling between events, but she’ll be relatively fresh for the long jump. Jennifer Smyth (Sr, Bradford, Starke, FL) best should be enough for second (19-02.00), but her region performance was sub par. Jr Brittany Brown (Eustis) and speedster Octavious Freeman (Lake Wales) could contend for a top three showing in a very deep LJ field.

2A State Best        11.40 Octavious Freeman         Lake Wales

State Leader         11.40 Octavious Freeman         Lake Wales

State Record         11.4 Zundra Feagin                  Cocoa (1989)

National Leader     11.30 Chalonda Goodman        Newman

Soph Octavious Freeman has been on fire the last two weeks. A handtimed 11.1 at districts was validated by an FAT 11.40 (US #2) last week at regions (11.92 in prelims). Since the Florida Relays (2nd place, 11.75, -1.2), Freeman has knocked off over 0.3 of second and is rounding into superb form. As a frosh she won the Golden South Classic in 11.66 and this season is approaching Marion Jones soph record of 11.17 set in 1991. The record assault may have to wait until the summer post season races where her competition should be more formidable. This could be a special race to watch.

Girls 1600 Meter Run

2A State Best        5:01.26        Joane Pierre          Immokalee

State Leader         4:56.64        Shelby Hayes        Winter Park

Last year, Joann Pierre (Sr, Immokalee) battled Sarah Davis(Jr, Bishop Kenny) to the wire to claim the title. Pierre did the same in cross country before succumbing to Stephanie Schappert (So, Pope John Paul II) in the final 400m. Pierre had a wire to wire win at the Florida Relays turning back the state’s best and will be tough to beat. Stephanie Strasser ( Jr, Fernandina Beach), an Illinois transfer, is the lone runner to have cracked the 5:00 barrier and is rounding into form. Schappert has a strong base from cross country, has showed some speed in the 800m(2:15.15) and has shown the resolve this season to win when it counts. It will be a close race with possibly three runners under 5:00 and the winner winning by the slightest of margins.

This year, they again enter with three of the four athletes from last year’s team. The newby is Melissa Romelus, the favorite in the SP. Raines is a close second and will chase Golden Gate to the finish in a speedy final.

2008 state runner-up, Connor Revord (Sr, Jesuit, Tampa, FL) soloed a PB 4:11.5 in the friendly confines of Pepin Rood Stadium on the University of Tampa campus on April 3. He’ll have his best shot to win this year after facing NCA DI signees Joseph Franklin and Andy Biladeau. Colin Barker ( Jr, Bishop Kenny) and teammate Michael Wallace (Jr, Bishop Kenny) have the best shot of stealing the victory from Revord. Barker sped to a 4:13.96 behind state leader Derek Wehunt( Sr, Sickles, Tampa, FL) Revord to finish 3rd the Florida Relays. Wallace has the next best time of 4:17.23 from the Florida Relays as well. The question remains whether Barker and Wallace will run this event. Wallace DNFed in the 1600m last year, but came back to win the 3200m. Barker is scheduled to run a leg of the 4 x 800m, the 1600m and the 3200m, where he has the best time by 10 + seconds.

2A State Best- 41.87- Monsignor Pace (Miami, FL)

State Leader- 41.03-Deerfield Beach

National Leader     40.71 Miller Grove, GA

For a small school, Monsignor Pace (Miami, FL) has made a name for itself. Last year, they won the state championship (41.18) and recorded the 9th best time in the country (41.04). This year, they qualified at regions with three of the same members of the 2008 team; Issac Dixon replacing Derrick Hopkins who has battled a hamstring injury this season. Hopkins could compete making a sub 41.00 quite possible. Godby (Tallahassee, FL), Pahokee, Arnold, and Trinity Catholic will battle it out for that podium spots and possibly dip under 42.00 as well.

Terrance Lowder (Bay, Panama City, FL) is peaking nicely having lowered his PB by nearly a second.

2A State Best- 1:52.60-Darrin Gibson, Robinson (Orlando, FL)

State Leader- 1:52.60-Darrin Gibson, Robinson (Orlando, FL)

In head to head match-ups this season, Darrin Gibson (Sr, Robinson, Tampa FL) has come out the victor over Connor Revord ( Jesuit, Tampa, FL).  His best of 1:52.60 leads the state. Not bad for a guy who finished 4th last year in a time of 1:57.99. Ahead of him was Revord (2nd in 1:55.88) who doesn’t shy away from laying it all out there. Just how much Revord will have will depend on the 1600m outcome.

2A State Best- 21.56- Kayvon Webster, Monsignor Pace (Miami, FL)

State Leader- 20.99-Dentarius Locke (Chamberlain, FL)

Last year’s state champ Derrick Hopkins is on the mend and ran a decent 22.06 to finish 3rd in his region race. That may have been a good thing as he lost to the top two leading times of all the regional races, Kayvon Webster’s (Sr. Monsignor Pace), 21.62, and Tony McQuay’s (Sr, Suncoast, Riveria Beach, FL), 21.63. This race will be more than just region 4 though. Umatilla’s duo of Eric Samuels (Sr,21.66) and Chauncy Gaines(Jr, 21.81) along with region 3 champ, Antwan Story (Sr, Nature Coast, 21.87) will deepen the field in this highly competitive race.

2A State Best- 9:11.20- Colin Barker, Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville, FL)

State Leader- 9:06.78-Derek Wehunt, Sickles (Tampa, FL)

So many scenarios could play out here. Colin Barker (Jr, Bishop Kenny, Jacksonville, FL) is a huge favorite owning a 9:11.20 from the FSU Relays. His teammate, Michael Wallace (Jr) is the defending state champ, but has not improved on his best from last year. Then there is Eliott Clemente (Fr, Belen Jesuit) who sizzled during cross country, but has yet to blister a 3200m time. Finally, there is Jordan Schilit ( Sr, Jesuit, Tampa, FL) who knocked out a solo 9:22.30 at the UT Distance Carnival. My bet is that it will come down between Barker and Wallace with Barker being the favorite. Less so if he runs the 1600m.

2A State Best- 3:20.77-Dunnellon

State Leader- 3:13.15-Flagler Palm Coast (Bunnell, FL)

Godby (Tallahassee, FL), state runner-ups last year, are the slight favorite here, though they are scheduled to compete with only one member from last year’s team. Dunnellon, Bay, Monsignor Pace (Miami, FL), and Golden Gate (Naples, FL) are within a second of them so exchanges and bumping are quite possible and could determine outcome. Look for an exciting race to cap a sensational weekend.
