Boys Results - Girls Results Race distance 3.05 miles Course records: John Trautman Monroe-Woodbury HS 14:35 1984 Nicole Blood Saratoga Springs HS 16:41.9 2004 While the rest of the northeast was canceling or postponing events because of the forecast of heavy rains and high winds, the Suburban Council (Upstate New York) Championships went on as scheduled. Yes, it did rain the night before and morning of the race, and winds had been blowing, but by the time the meet started the winds had slowed and rain had begun to let up. While the freshmen had to run during what was left of the rain, the junior varsity and varsity races for the most part were without heavy rain or wind. The damage was already done to the course, however, as it was left in the worst conditions runners in the Northeast had faced all year. At left, Hannah Davidson led from the gun. At right, Burnt Hills' 2-3 finish helped them to 2nd. Photos John Nepolitan.
Girls Championship Just as it looked like the sun may make its first appearance of the day, the gun sounded for the Girls Championship race and, as expected, the Eastern States champion Hannah Davidson of Saratoga Springs went right to the front and ended the battle for the individual title early. By the time Davidson reached the end of the 400-meter starting straight, she already had built up a 20-meter lead which would grow all the way to the finish, as she stormed to a 46-second win in 17:22. And as Davidson was expected to have an easy win, so were her Saratoga teammates. The Blue Streaks, currently ranked #1 in New York Class “AA” and #1 in the NTN Northeast, placed its top 3 runners in the top 10, 5 in the top 12 and all of its runners in the top 18 for an easy 42 – 96 win over Burnt Hills (#1 in New York Class “A”). Behind Saratoga, a very tight race was developing as 3 teams would be separated by only 7 points. Burnt Hills gained an early advantage on the rest of the teams in the field when Sam Roecker and Meaghan Gregory crossed the line in 2nd and 3rd, but the scores tightened up as each team waited for the final scorer to cross the line. After four runners from each team had finished, the scores stood at Burnt Hills – 53, Shenendehowa (#10 in New York “AA”) – 68, Columbia (#16 New York “AA”) also at 68, Colonie (New York #9 class “AA”) – 94, Bethleham (New York # 21 “AA”), Shaker (New York #15 “AA”) – 114, Niskayuna (New York #23 “AA”) – 145, and Guilderland (New York # 18 “AA”) – 150. Shenendehowa’s Christine Sloat was the 1st of the 5th scorers to close the finish-line in 29th place and give her team temporary hold of the 2nd place trophy. As each race finisher came in, it was looking more and more like “Shen” would be holding onto 2nd. But then Lauren Mullins of Burnt Hills came into view and sealed her team’s win over the larger school by holding onto her 43rd place finish by just 6 tenths of a second. Behind the top two teams, a major shake up took place among the large Class “AA” schools. #10 Shenendehowa held off #16 Columbia by 6 points, but Columbia earned a convincing win over higher-ranked Colonie and Shaker. The strength of the Suburban Council is evident in that 8 of the top 25 teams in Class “AA” were on the line at Saratoga State Park and there is sure to be a shake up in those rankings following this weekend. In the weeks building up to these championships Steve Murdock (Shenendehowa) and Brian Rhodes-Devey (Guilderland) had let it be known they were going to take a shot at the course record owned by former national 3000 meter record holder and 1992 Olympian John Trautman (Monroe- Woodbury). Even though the course was in what many believed to be the worst condition ever as a result of the recent rain, the top two finishers in last years New York Championships still planned to work together through 2 miles and see if they could erase the 1984 mark. Jumping to the lead at the gun, Rhodes-Devey got the pack rolling and the two friends passed the first two miles in 4:50 and 9:50, each taking turns at the lead. Once past 2 miles, Murdock – who won this race in 2005 while running for Saratoga, before moving into the “Shen” district this past summer – moved out to a slight lead that would stretch to just over 6 seconds with 400 meters to go. As the two stormed down the final long straight, Rhodes-Devey – who has made a verbal commitment to attend Texas in 2007 – made one last run at the lead. But he was only able to pull back one second as Murdock, whose #1 college choice for 2007 is Syracuse but is also looking at other schools, crossed the line with a 14:59 clocking – well outside the record but still a fine performance. The two will take one more shot at the course mark on Friday at the Section 2 Championships, where the top team and 5 individuals not on the winning team in each class qualify for the New York State Public High School Championships at Warwick Valley November 11th (an on-site DyeStat meet). The team race was not nearly as close even though there were two teams ranked in the NTN Northeast on the starting line. Shenendehowa, the current #2 team, had little trouble taking the team title as individual champ Murdock was backed up by a team that placed 3-8-11-and 13th to record a 36 – 81 victory over NTN NE #6 Shaker. Shaker’s effort was hurt by the fact that RJ Sniffen, normally the team’s #1 or #2 runner, went down and later dropped out shortly after the mile point (as of this point it is not known the extent of the injury). Behind the top two teams there was not the shake up among the ranked teams as in the girls’ race. Once again, the Suburban Council showed that it is one of the strongest cross country leagues in the nation, and that the stiff week-by-week competition faced by its teams results in it always having a number of nationally ranked teams and individuals. Since the inception of the Nike Team Nationals, at least one team from this league has qualified each year and 2006 should be no different. Runners from the this league might also be making the trip to San Diego for the Foot Locker Nationals as both Davidson and Rhodes-Devey made the trip in 2005 and, along with Murdock, are among the individuals ranked best in the region and country.
