Boys 1. Collegiate, NY – Ran at the NYC Mayors meet at fabled Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Saturday – the terminal point of the #1 Subway at 242nd Street – AND LOST! But not to fret the Dutchman out of Manhattan raced without their 1 & 2 men: Chris Williams and Dylan Trotzuk. The Collegiate squad will skip the mammoth Manhattan College XC Invitational in order to concentrate on taking their SAT’s. They will next be in action at the Brown Invitational in Rhode Island. 2. Coatsville, PA – Coatesville wins at Steel City. At the STEEL CITY INVITATIONAL, Coatesville not only defended home turf, they delivered another message to the XC community - this team is among the best in the US. Scoring just 40 points with 294 runners in the race, they went 2-7-8-12-13 (scored 2-7-8-11-12) behind the 2nd place 15:54.5 by Kyle Dawson. Girls 1. Hilton, NY – The nation's leading team is getting in some quality work up in the Rochester area under the watchful eye of Coach Mike Szczepanik out of Monroe County, NY. The Hilton Lady Runnin’ Cadets will next be action at the “biggest & the best” Manhattan College Girls Eastern State Championships. Here is an overview of the race from armoryfoundation.org web master Mr. Tim Fulton: Edward Bowes Girls Eastern States Championship at 2:38pm Where to start with what may be the deepest Girls Easterns race in the meets history, There are so many stories. NTN Impact – Not only will the feature race of the day be a battle among Northeast teams, but the top 3 teams from the Southeast will travel to New York in an effort to not only earn an automatic spot in NTN but maybe earn an at large birth for the region. The Northeast teams are led by #1 Hilton(NY), #3 Saratoga(NY) (the defending team champ), #4 Greenwich Central(NY), # 5 Colts Neck(NJ) who will be running at full strength for the 1st time all season and #6 Fayetteville Manlius(NY). The Southeast will be represented by #1 Roosevelt(Md), #2 Episcopal(Fl) the Great American Champs, and #3 Midlothian(Va). Others with very strong teams are Howell(#3 in NJ), Bronxville(#2 in NY Class C), Msgr Donovan(#4 in NJ), Pope John XXIII(# 6 in NJ), and Ridge (NJ #2). Out of towners – out of state teams coming to New York include: Bromfield(Ma), Tatnall(Md), Clovis(Ca), Central Cambria(Pa), Bryn Mawr(Md), Conrad(Ct), Champlain Valley Union(Vt), South Tahoe(Ca), and Ridgefield(Ct). Rematch and old friends now going head to head – At last years Easterns Saratoga just edged out Hilton for the team title. The Saratoga winning margin was even closer at the New York Class AA Championships, but Hilton would pass on the Federation meet to get ready and healthy for NTN. Then in the deep mud of Portland Hilton upset Saratoga for the national title, this race will be the 1st re-match of the two New York powers. Thoughts that Saratoga may be facing a down year were dispelled with a 100 point win over Colts Neck at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational in late September. Hilton recently was able to hold off Northeast #2 Radnor (Pa) at the Warwick Wave Mania setting up this weekends rematch. Meanwhile former teammates at Saratoga Hanna Davidson (Saratoga) and Catilin Lane (Greenwich, NY) will face each other for the 1st time as members of different high school teams, but they are not the only Footlocker Finalists in the field. Shelby Greany (Suffern) and Briana Jackucewicz (Colts Neck) will be at or near the front from the gun. Others who can grab the individual crown include: Ashley Higginson (Colts Neck, NJ), Allison Sawyer (Hilton, NY), Kristy Longman (Sayville, NY), Tori Pennings (Warwick Valley, NY) in additional watch precocious frosh Mackenzie Carter (FM). As one long time Northeast coach said. “this may be one of the greatest girls xc fields ever assembled!” THE START LIST AT MCXI 2. Radnor, PA – Off this week and will go into their league and county championships. 3. Saratoga Springs, NY – They are back and with a vengeance. The harrierette’s of Kranik & Kranik are ALWAYS ready for the Girls Easterns – let the games begin!!! 4. Greenwich, NY – just check out pole position #11 for the Edward Bowes Girls Easterns. Led by Caitlin Lane watch them closely on Saturday! 5. Colts Neck, NJ – Now is the time for this Garden State squad to gel. They have potentially the best 1-2 punch in the field! 6. Fayetteville Manlius, NY – Laying in wait. Will we find out how good this Mackenzie Carter paced squad really is, Carter is a very talented runner and is just a frosh. 7. Bromfield, MA – Coming off huge 45 point win at the Boston Invitational up at Franklin Park last week – they looked strong and had a deep JV squad as well. This Massachusetts squad is looking forward to the mammoth Manhattan College meet to prove how good it is as they are entered in the Girls Easterns State Championship race. 8. Burnt Hills, NY – Loading it up for their own BH Invite next week – WILL NOT be in the Girls Easterns at MCXI as of this writing. 9. East Aurora, NY – Coach Walt Mc Laughlin’s team is ready for the big time: “All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.” Reference Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd. (1950). EA's girls are considered a lock for a sixth straight sectional title because they return much of their state championship squad as well as Catherine Lusardi, a junior who missed last year's cross country postseason but who won the state track title in the 3,000-meter run. Returning for the Blue Devils are sophomore Kristen Weberg, junior Jenna Hulton, sophomore Erin Crawford, senior Marla Kelley and junior Tara O'Connor. 10. North Kingston, RI – An impressive fifth at Great American let’s see what’s next for this Rhode Island powerhouse! |
