Featured Events

Boys Invitational 1000m
Grabbing the lead from the gun Jason Apwah(Roxbury, NJ) would push the pace through splits of 27.0-55.9-1:26.9 and 1:58.2. Behind Apwah Max Bruno(Indian Hills, NJ) was working his way slowly through the field and would come to Apwah’s shoulder at the bell. Off the final turn Bruno would try to swing around the leader and the two would battle right to the line crossing in a dead heat. Apwah would get the victory as both were given the same time of 2:27.2 breaking the New Jersey state record of Steve Schadler, Bergenfield 2:27.7.

Jason Apwah(Roxbury, NJ) 2:27.2
Max Bruno(Indian Hills, NJ) 2:27.2
Chris Ferry, Henderson (Pa.) 2:29.1
Niall Buckley, Ridgewood(NJ) 2:30.4
Nick Miehe, DePaul(NJ) 2:31.4

Girls Invitational 1000
Devotia Moore of Townsend Harris (NY) would lead the field through splits of 31.3-66.7-1:43.1 before Kristin Reese(Carmel, NY) took over with 300 meters to go. Hitting the 800 meter point in 2:18.1, Reese had gapped the field and was not challenged over the last lap. The Carmel junior would cross the line in a USA #2 time of 2:51.2, her 2nd USA #2 in 3 days, as Reese was part of Carmel’s USA #2 4 x 800 relay this past weekend.

Kristin Reese(Carmel, NY) 2:51.2
Emma Miller-Bedell, Tappan Zee (NY) 2:53.6
Devotia Moore, Townsend Harris (NY) 2:55.4
Julie Hudak, Pearl River (NY) 2:56.1
Jahlisa Smith, Plainfield(NJ) 2:56.2

Total of 8 girls under 3:00

Boys 3200
Andrew Hanko(Trinity Christian, NJ) 9:09.6
Running splits of 4:36 and 4:33, Hanko, who just committed to the US Naval Academy, ran a US #1 in the 3200

Girls 3200
Briana Jackucewicz (Colts Neck, NJ) leads wire to wire and wins in 10:55.4

Girls DMR
Pope John (NJ) 12:09.5 to just hold off Warwick Valley(NY)

Boys DMR
Jackson(NJ) and Old Bridge(NJ) were out in front alone through 3 legs, but a slow opening 2 laps of the anchor leg allowed 3 other teams to get back in the mix. When the real racing began with just over 2 laps to go Old Bridge, Jackson and Collegiate(NY) had broken away. A three team battle down the straight saw Old Bridge(10:20.1) just get the nod over Jackson(10:20.4) and Collegiate in 10:20.7, with Arlington(NY) 10:25.6 and Don Bosco Prep(NJ) 10:26.4 in 4th and 5th also under 10:30.

While the Distance Medley Relays and the Invitational 1000 meter runs are the focus of the Varsity Classic at the Armory Track and Field Center in Upper Manhattan, there were many other national class performances.

Girls 400m - Breanda Crump (Mount Vernon, NY) leads wire to wire and then holds off a late rush by Elizabeth Mott (New Rochelle, NY), 56.6 to 57.0, to take the 2 lap event.

Girls 800 and 1600 – While many of the top distance athletes were either in the DMR or 1000, there was still plenty of talent in the 800 and 1600. Ariann Neutts, (Roxbury, NJ) ran 2:16.6 to outclass the 800 field, winning by 3.5 seconds over Nicole Quagliana (Mount Olive, NJ) 2:20.0 and Ashley Cromartie, (Roxbury, NJ) 2:20.9. In the 1600, Kesley Ramsey (Ramapo, NJ) ran away from the field for a 10 second victory, crossing the line in 5:02.3.

Girls Field Events - As in most meets, the field events seemed to get overshadowed by the action on the track. But Taryn O'Connor (Hillsborough, NJ), 47-6 set a new meet record in the winning the shot put, while Lataya Dixon (JP Stevens, NJ) tied the meet record in the high jump with a 5’ 6” clearance. Over on the pole vault runway, Stephanie Duffy (Washingtonville, NY) cleared 12’6” to add 3” to her New York list-leading performance from earlier in the season.

Girls 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 Relays
- Warwick Valley(NY) came up just short in the DMR, but bounced back to take top honors in the 4 x 800 relay, winning a tight battle in 9:21.3 over Roxbury(NJ) 9:27.3 and Pope John(NJ) 9:29.1. Ten teams broke 9:55. In the final event of the evening, Pope John(NJ) would be the sole team under 4:00 in the 4x400, taking top honors with a 3:59.8 to beat Ridgewood(NJ) 4:01.7.

Boys 200 and 400 – Trenton Central (NJ) showed its sprint power as Tykeen Fulton 22.0. and Dean McCleese 22.2 took the top two places in the 200. The 400 mirrored the girls event as Antonio Abney (Willingboro, NJ) 49.1 held off Bernard Goodwyn (Glen Mills, Pa) 49.2 to take the win.

Boys 800 and 1600 - Rob McNally (Upper Darby, Pa) may not have gotten into the invitational 1000, but a 1:57.1 was enough to win the 800 by 2 seconds. Meanwhile, Chris Aldrich of Henderson(Pa) stayed with the pack through the half way point of the 1600 before pulling away for an easy 4:21.7 win. Aldrich was able to power away from the field by throwing in a sub 30 200 with 3 laps to go to come through 1200 in 3:20.

Boys Field Events - Semai Spencer (Glen Mills, Pa) added over a foot to the meet record in the triple jump with his 48’ 5” win over Devon Bond (Trenton Central, NJ) 46’ 4 ¼”. Later in the evening, Bond would come back to set his own meet record with a 6’10” clearance in the high jump. Bond would take 3 attempts at 7’1” which would have added 1” to his national-leading performance, but would be unsuccessful. In the shot circle, Steve D'Arcy (Hanover Park, NJ) 57-0 ¼ would win easily over Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains Fanwood, NJ) 55’ 8 ½” as the top 9 would record marks over the 50’ barrier. The closest battle in the field events would take place in the long jump pit as Jon Arnold
(West Orange, NJ) 23’1” would win by just a half-inch over Hanif Kendrick (Franklin, NJ) 23-0 ½.

Boys 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 Relays
-Running from weakest (2:02.5) to strongest (1:54.7 by Gigi Gibilisco), Notre Dame (NJ) became the third team from New Jersey to go under 8:00 in the 4 x 800 in 2007 with a 7:56.7 win. Trenton Central (NJ) grabbed the lead of the 4 x 400 at the 1st hand-off and steadily pulled away for a 3:23.2 win while Clarkstown South (NY) 3:26.7 was just able to hold off a fast closing Glen Mills (Pa) 3:26.8 for 2nd.
