Franklyn Sanchez beats Andy Powell in sizzling 2-mile at Massachusetts State Meet Feb. 20, 8:49.60 to 8:50.29.

From Mark Mayall:
"This afternoon at the Mass. State Meet, Franklyn Sanchez and Andy Powell both ran 8:49 for two miles, with Sanchez outkicking Powell. Sorry, don't have the tenths and hundredths. It was a great race, to put it mildly. Powell towed Sanchez through the mile in 4:21 whereupon Sanchez threw in a surge and took the lead. Powell regained the lead by about 2200m and looked to be home free with a 25 meter lead on Franklyn with under 400m left, but the gap got eaten up in the final 200. Powell's last 400 was his slowest, around 68 seconds.

"While Powell has nothing to hang his head about, he ran himself to the limit, kudos have to go to Sanchez and his coach, Jean Cann. The word on the track was that the surge at the mile was planned to take Powell out of his rhythm, and while it looked like a failed tactic with 800 to go, it ended up working out after all. "

From Sherman Smith:
"That meet was the best meet I've ever seen. The two just totally destroyed the rest of the field right from the getgo. Splits were 63, 2:08, 3:14, 4:21( This is where Sanchez made the move past Powell) 5:26, 6:35( Powell went by sanchez and looked like Sanchez was done), 7:40-1 for Powell and sanchez was 7:45 with 200 to go. Sanchez took off and caught him and went by. Powell tried to react, but couldn't. It was too late. Sanchez' last 200 was somewhere between 28 and 29 seconds; not sure if this is helpful but I was there and remember the splits."
