Mt. Sac Invitational - Friday, October 23rd - Saturday October 24th (Below on
entry information through Sunday, October 11th more schools should be added to below
entry lists, there are always significant adds)
By Doug Speck
One of the highlights of the regular season nationally on the prep scene will
take place in Walnut, California at the annual Mt. SAC Invitational High School
Cross-Country Meet. A number of the finest Girl individual athletes in the nation, led by
Californias 1997 Foot Locker Finalists Sara Bei (Montgomery, Santa Rosa 10th
nation 1997), Lauren Fleshman (Canyon, Canyon Country 14th 1997), Sara Gorton (Mountain
Pointe, Phoenix, Az 18th), Trina Cox (Santa Rosa 24th), and Allyson Marquand (University,
Irvine 28th), will be joined by surprising 1996 Foot Locker National third placer Abby
Miller (Green Valley, Henderson, Nv), who is back hotter than a pistol this Fall! Yucaipa,
the nations #11 ranked Girls squad headlines that half of the meet.
The Boys portion of the weekend will be highlighted by team action
featuring two of the nations top six ranked squads, Santa Ana and Long Beach Poly,
with Belmont (Los Angeles) also ranked among the top 25 at #20. Smaller schools,
California sized Division III, IV, and V (1216 and below in enrollment for three grades
male/female) will race on Friday, 10/23, with the Division I and II schools racing on
Saturday. Sweepstakes races in each of the Division III, IV, and V school size divisions
for Boys and Girls will close late afternoon Friday action, with Team and Individual
Sweepstakes races starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday 10/24, featuring the top overall teams
and strongest individuals.
Sara Bei leads stellar girls field
One has to take a deep breath to take in the quality of young ladies who will
attend and race during the weekend. At this point the Team Sweepstakes event will feature
Abby Miller and her Green Valley team, with the 1996 Foot Locker star racing 4:53 for 1600
meters the spring of her ninth grade year before falling ill to a variety of ailments
during her tenth grade year. Miller dusted Allyson Marquand by 40 seconds at Dana Hills a
couple of weeks back, racing a blazing 16:43 on a basically flat course where the last
three quarters of a mile is a gradual downhill. Marquand, 4:55.43 and 10:43.35 in the
distances last spring is dividing her time between soccer and cross-country this fall, and
here will compete in the Individual Sweeps race. Sara Bei, also in the Individual Sweeps
race on Saturday, was the state track double distance winner at 4:49.21 and 10:31.06, and
has continued amazing improvement after her eighth place finish last year at Foot Locker
that marked her as the nations top frosh athlete. She has romped over all
competition this Fall, breaking her own course records by close to a minute in some cases,
certainly indicating the ability to edge much closer to the top runners in the nation
later this season. Lauren Fleshman (Canyon, Canyon Country Individual Sweeps 2nd State Div
I CC 1997) is another who is undefeated this season, with comfortable Invitational wins by
margins and with efforts showing there is still plenty in the tank for the 10:38.65 3200m
star. Arizonan Sara Gorton was 18th last year at the FL Finals, with a fine spring that
had her record 4:55.17 and 10:33.11 distance marks. Gorton has shown superiority to this
years Arizona group, with competition here in the Individual Sweeps race. Santa
Rosas Trina Cox (defending State Div I Champ) has followed in Julia Stamps
footsteps for Coach Doug Courtemarche of Santa Rosa HS, with a big win against some of the
nations best in Alabamas Vulcan Classic to back up a good 1998 spring track
season which had her race 10:33.75 for 3200 meters. Mission San Joses Katie
Hotchkiss is one of the nations top middle distance runners, with 2:09.77 (800m) and
4:49.77 (1600m) bests and the defending State Division II Cross-Country champ. Courtney
Baird (Helix, La Mesa 3rd State Div II CC 1997) is very, very hot this season out of the
San Diego area, racing under 17:00 for a flat 3 at the Woodbridge Invitational. This will
probably be the best in-season gathering of Girl runners anywhere in the
nation this Fall. Latesha Jones (Rialto 9th St Div I CC 97) and Heather Shurtleff (West
Hills, Santee 9th St Div II CC 97) will be in the Individual Sweeps race also.
Girls Teams
Team-wise, Yucaipa, last years co-nationally #1 ranked squad, is strong
again this year, ranked eleventh currently by Harrier magazine, with Green Valley of
Henderson and Abby Miller currently ranked twenty-third in the country. Yucaipa handled
Green Valley 91:53 to 93:37 at the recent Dana Hills Invitational. Other squads ranked
statewide in California at the Division I and II level who will join those teams in the
Sweeps event are Nevada Union (Grass Valley 5th Div I), Ayala (Chino Hills 6th Div I),
Santa Rosa (8th Div I), Peninsula (Rolling Hills 9th Div I), Clovis West (Fresno 10th Div
I), Santa Margarita (Rancho SM 1st Div II), Woodbridge (Irvine 2nd Div II), Newport Harbor
(Newport Beach 4th Div II), and Brea Olinda (6th Div II). University of San Francisco,
three-time defending State Division V champions (at 299 students) will move up to face the
bigger schools on Saturday, with Coach Mike McManuss group certainly one of the
nations strongest under-500 student squads.
Boys Teams
Boys action will center around strong teams, with the States top
nine ranked Division I (large school) squads entered. Santa Ana (ranked third in the
country currently) has a veteran group that has marked team-time victories
over defending State Division I Champs Long Beach Poly at the Laguna Hills Invitational
and the Woodbridge meet. Poly (sixth nationally) has had strong frosh Bryan Durham and
Oscar Mendez develop into fine varsity runners to offset Santa Anas very strong and
solid senior pack, led by Alfonso Leon and Juan Salgado, among the top dozen finishers in
the State Meet. This will be the first Varsity to Varsity meeting of the two
teams this Fall, with Santa Ana winning the team-time contest at Laguna Hills and
Woodbridge against Poly when athletes ran in by-grade contests. Yucaipa raced
magnificently in its own Invitational two weeks ago, with Saugus able to run with any of
the top three teams on paper. The above mentioned four teams (Poly- Santa
Ana-Yucaipa-Saugus) fill out the top four spots in California Division I rankings. Don
Lugo (Chino 5th), Belmont (LA 6th), Nevada Union (Grass Valley 7th), Dana Hills (Dana
Point 8th), and Murrieta Valley (9th) are the other top ten ranked teams in California
Division I who will be in the Saturday Boys Team Sweeps race. Division II squads
ranked in Californias top ten are Newport Harbor (Newport Beach-2nd) and Eureka
(4th). Nevada Unions Mike Gregg was 6th in State Div I last year with a 9:24.86 from
track over 3200m.
Saturday Boys Individual Sweeps
Saturdays Boys Individual Sweeps race will have a good group.
Venturas Josh Spiker was 9:18.23 last year for 3200m as a soph, with a fine Fall
harrier season. Justin Willingham (Beyer, Modesto) was State Division III champ last year
for East Union of Manteca in the Fall, and had a 4:13.3 1600m best in the spring as one of
the nations top 1600 runners. James DeBruhl (Chino) has run a number of strong races
this season, with a 4:15.07 from last springs track season. Serra (San Diego) had
Marcus Chandler (6th St Div II CC 97) win his division at the Stanford Invite, with
4:15.86 and 9:22.92 track credentials. Steve Laurie (Mara Carillo, Santa Rosa) was 4:21.20
last spring, with Jose Herrera (Loara, Anaheim 9th St Div II CC 97) 9:13.19, and Augie
Escobar (Villa Park) strong at the front of major invitationals this Fall.
Friday action
Fridays action will feature many of the States best smaller schools.
The Boys of Bosco Tech (Rosemead) are ranked #1 statewide at Division III, with #2 ranked
Redwood (Larkspur) coming south to challenge the Southern Section power. La Jolla (5th)
and San Luis Obispo (9th) are also in Fridays Division III sweeps race.
Interesting match-ups in Division IV
Division IV marks one of the more interesting match-ups of recent years, with
Riverbank quite surprising with its improvement since last year, ranked #1 statewide, with
perenniel power Nordhoff (Ojai) ranked close behind them. Riverbank has romped over every
field they have been a part of this Fall, with team leader Victor Flores the winner in at
least five Invitationals thus far this season. Flores (mono) and the rest of the time had
a variety of ailments at the end of the 1997 season where they finished dead last in the
state meet after winning the Sac Joaquin Section, with Nordhoff a good group notorious for
amazing peaks at the end of the seasonthey amazingly went 1-2-3 as a part of their
46 point total in winning another State title last Fall. The contest here should be a good
warm-up to the State meet. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), ranked #3 statewide, Estancia (8th),
and La Salle (10th) are others ranked high who will be in the race. Riverbanks
Flores, Kevin Lelles (Notre Dame), and Mark Nevers of Oak Park were the first three in
this race among finishers in early Octobers Stanford Invitational Division IV
contest.
CA Top-ranked Maranatha heads Division V race
The Boys Division V race has the States top ranked squad in
Maranatha (Sierra Madre), #3 University (San Francisco), #4 Desert Christian (Lancaster),
#5 Flintridge Prep (La Canada), #6 L.A. Baptist (North Hills), #7 Woodcrest Christian
(Riverside), #9 Crossroads (Santa Monica), and #10 Poly (Pasadena). Jeff Tomlinson
(Crossroads 3rd St Div V CC 1997), who ran a fine 9:22.12 last year in track for 3200m,
was the top Division V finisher at the Stanford Invite.
Lompoc-Newbury Park on Friday
The Girls Division III Friday Sweeps will have #3 ranked in state Lompoc
battling #6 Newbury Park. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) and St. Joseph (Santa Maria) are
two very fine Division IV squads, ranked one and two, respectively, there. Their first
match-up this season here should be a great one at that levels Sweeps event. Corona
del Mar scored 48 points to win the Division IV race at Stanford, with St. Joseph the same
type of dominance in other Invitationals. The two squads could total under 100:00 for five
scorers here, with 20:00 per scorer at this level very impressive!
Invader from New York
Louisville (Woodland Hills #3), Nordhoff (Ojai #6), and Malibu (#10) are others
ranked currently at the State Level Division IV. Tri-Valley (Grahamsville, New York), who
blew in a couple of years back led by Kate Landau, and recorded the fastest team time of
the entire weekend, will be out to run Division V one again. Desert Christian (Lancaster
#2 ranked statewide), Chadwick (Palos Verdes #3), LA Baptist (North Hills #5), and
Flintridge Prep (La Canada #6) will represent California at the Division V level. Angela
Petersen (Francis Parker, San Diego) was a fine 5:02.64 and 10:58.67 in the distances last
spring after a runner-up effort in State at this level in Cross-Country.
