Event #82 - Invitational Men's 100 Meter Dash

A dynamite group with super early season performances will

battle here! State 100 meter champion Justin Fargas (Notre Dame,

Sherman Oaks) was the winner in the most recent show-down of top

stars, racing 10.55 in the Pasadena Games to even up the season

record against league rival Miguel Fletcher (Alemany, Mission

Hills), who had won the earlier Alemany Relays at 10.47w.

Darrell Rideaux (Poly, Long Beach), third at Alemany, was the

Stanford winner two weekends ago at 10.47 in the build-up towards

a great race here! Aaron Bryant (Wilcox, Santa Clara) was 10.50

last year, with Joseph Hunter (Vacaville) (10.65 and 21.0w in

1997) looking great in Sacramento Valley action. It will be

another in the great tradition of Arcadia sprint match-ups!

Event #105 - Men's 200 Meter Dash

The great group of Men sprinters wil come together once

again here, with Kareem Kelly (Poly, Long Beach) the nation's #4

returnee and quickest 1997 soph at 20.97. Miguel Fletcher was

21.12w last year, with Joseph Hunter (Vacaville) 21.03w and

21.34. Justin Fargas (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks), State 100m

champion, has picked up this event this season, with this his

first serious Invitational race. Ike Okenwa (Morse, San Diego)

has run 20.9 this season to add to a great field!

Event #94 - Men's Invitational 400 meters

Sultan McCullough (Muir, Pasadena) is the nation's top

overall sprinter (10.24w-20.62 nation's top 200 meter runner-45.8

relay leg over 400 meters 1997), and will be moving up here to

face a strong field. Matt Lea (Camarillo) shocked with a 47.6 in

a dual meet a week ago! Blaine Bussey (Taft, Woodland Hills) was

a fine 48.67 winner two weeks ago, with Rod Arzu (Notre Dame,

Sherman Oaks) 48.70 and Bussey's teammate Larry Jones 48.71 in

that same race. Ernesto Salinas (Gilroy) was the Stanford

winner at 48.84, with Jafar Williams (St. Mary's, Berkeley) the

K-Bell winner up north.

Event #86 - Men's 800 Meters

Ryan Meuse (Simi Valley) was sixth in last year's State Meet

over 800 meters, and 1:52.57 for second here (he is the #5

champion last year and is the top 1600 meter runner in the nation

at 4:10.08. Brian Lindsey (Timpanogus, Provo, Ut) shocked with a

4:15.42 indoors this winter at high altitude, with Kevin Smith

(Ridgefield, Wa) 4:16.6, Juan Chavira (Hanford) 4:17.1, Adam

Greene (St. Augustine, San Diego) 4:18.05, and State Meet

placers Jason Taylor (Peninsula, Rolling Hills) 4:19.35 and Mike

Altieri (Jesuit, Sacramento) 4:19.36 leading a pack that should

result in a ton of personal bests! Brian Turner (Millard North,

Omaha, Ne) was 1:54.94 last year as a ninth grader and a Foot

Locker Cross-Country National Finalist this Fall as a soph!

Event #96 - Men's 3200 Meter Run

This meet has a reputation for great depth in the distances,

which should hold true here. Chad Durham (Poly, Long Beach) was

6th here last year in his lifetime best of 9:11.36 (#5 returnee

in country), with Joe Urbanski (Salpointe Catholic, Tucson, Az)

9:13.72 (#6 back nationally) and Gary Passanisi (Aptos) 9:13.98

(#7 athlete in nation) also in the top nine in a quick 1997

Arcadia field. Passanisi took Durham in a quick Stanford 3000m

run 8:38.13 to 8:40.79, with San Benito's Cuco Chavez (also here

) sandwiched in between at 8:40.21. Andrew Hill (Los Altos) was

fourth at Stanford in 8:42.72, with Ronnie Buchanan (Righetti,

Santa Maria) a 9:15.70 best, and super soph, Josh Rohatinsky

(Provo, Ut) 9:16.10 adding to great depth! Steve Smith (Ayala,

Chino Hills) was the Foot Locker Western Regional Champion.

Event #78 - Invitational Men's High Hurdles

Ricardo Moody (Harrison, Colorado Springs, Co) exploded this

winter to a 7.16 55mHH indoors, the #4 time in U.S. Prep history,

and .08 beind Arcadia Meet Record Holder Deworski Odom

(Philadelphia) and his National Indoor record for the same

distance. Moody has been under 14.0 outdoors already this

spring. Marcell Almond (St. Paul, Santa Fe Springs), the

National Scholastic Indoor Pentathlon Champion this winter, has

started fast, with a 13.7w outdoor clocking a month ago. Devon

Davis (Pickering, Ontario, Canada) has run 13.8, with Tom

Bogdanoff (Buchanan, Clovis) 14.08 last year.

Event #78 - Invitational Men's High Hurdles

and .08 beind Arcadia Meet Record Holder Deworski Odom

(Philadelphia) and his National Indoor record for the same

distance. Moody has been under 14.0 outdoors already this

Event #98 - Men's 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles

A good group will battle here, with Al Williams (Irvine)

37.55 and Nick Ray (Ridgeview, Bakersfield) 37.62 among the top

dozen returnees in the nation here. Elmo Traylor (Muir,

Pasadena) has run 37.9, with Brandon Sproat (Tolleson) 38.0

Arizona's fastest in this event. Tom Bogdanoff (Buchanan,

Clovis) was 38.08 in 1997.

Event #70 - Men's Invitational 400 Meter Relay

Last year Muir (Pasadena) raced to the fastest time for the

entire year in the nation with their 40.28 (and mind-boggling

40.90 for their "B" team in the same race). Three of the four

off the 40.28 team return, with super sprinter Sultan McCullough

(10.24w-20.62) running leg two thus far this year. Muir has run

41.50 this year, with two big Invitational wins. Long Beach

Poly, 40.7 last year, has everyone back, with a strong 41.03

Stanford Invitational win two weeks back. University City (San

Diego) was 41.56 behind Muir's 41.50 three weeks ago, with Serra

(Gardena) great potential off soph Warren Rogers (10.61w and

21.13 as a frosh last year) and Dashaun McCullough (10.46w and

21.55 as a soph and 8th in the state meet 100 in 1997). With a

good crowd and the adrenaline pumping for this first big race of

the meet this event is always a big crowd favorite!

Event #110 - Men's 1600 Meter Relay

A great battle for four-lap relay supreamacy will close out

the Men's half of the meet. Muir (Pasadena) took last year's

race here in a spirited effort after team leader Obea Moore went

down with injury in 3:10.99, with the nucleus for another fine

squad for Coach Clyde Turner. Muir led the nation last year with

its 3:08.72 best, with Poly (Long Beach) 3:11.94 (#3 team nation

1997), and eventual State Champion Dominguez (Compton) 3:12.51

(#5 team country 1997). All return very fine teams for 1998,

with Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 3:14.53 (nation's #11 team 1997),

and Taft (Woodland Hills) 3:15.22 (nation's #16 squad last year)

very tough also. Dominguez took a big Pasadena Games showdown at

3:16.53 with Taft 3:16.64 and Muir 3:17.28 two weekends back! It

will be a great close to what should be a fine meet!

Event #106 - Men's Distance Medley Relay

Ten of the top thirty times for the entire year in 1997 came

from this event! Nevada Union (Grass Valley) had the #7 time

nationally in 1997 (10:20.47 here) with a great group back for

98. West Hills (Santee) is saving super soph Evan Fox (4:16.74

as frosh last year for 1600m) for this event, with Del Mar (San

Jose), Dobson (Mesa, Az), Mead (Spokane, Wa), and Nordhof (Ojai)

capable of putting together sub-10:20 squads.

Event #85 - Men's High Jump

One of the Meet surprises in 1997 was Ridgeview's Jason

Howard, jumping 7'02.25. 6'10 jumpers Casey Clark (Mt. Spokane,

Mead, Wa), Marcell Almond (St. Paul, Santa Fe Springs), Ricky

Duff (Manual Arts, L.A.), and Darren Marble (Los Altos) lead a

fine group of 6'6 or better jumpers. Clark bears watching, with

his 6'10 1998 best accomplished in the very cold early eastern

Washington spring.

Event #65 - Men's Long Jump

Devon Davis (Pickerington, Ontario, Canada) had a 1997 best

of 24'5 in this event, was sixth here last year and won the

Triple Jump. Charles James (Morse, San Diego) has a 24'2 best,

with Daniel Herman (Granite Hills, El Cajon) 23'09, and last

year's Champion Kenney Pearson (Stagg, Stockton) 23'07.75 making

this a very competitive event.

Event #90 - Men's Triple Jump

Canadian Devon Davis (Pickering, Ontario) has a 50'8

personal best, with Jerriod Mack (St. Mary's, Berkeley) improving

to 49'08.5 two weekends ago. Matt Primous (Lompoc) was 49'1.5

last year, with Maurice Washington (Stagg, Stockton) and Ryan

Fernandez (Skyline, Oakland) out over 47'0 this year.

Event #67 - Men's Pole Vault

Mark Unzueta (Lemoore) returns as the =#4 Pole Vaulter in

the nation with his best of 16'2. Pooh Williams (Centennial,

Gresham, Or) has already been over 15'06 this spring, with Mike

Mortensen (Corona del Sol, Tempe, Az) 15'1 this spring, with

Robert Carbajal (Mt. Pleasant, San Jose) and Andy Peake

(Peninsula Rolling Hills) both 15-footers.

Event #74 - Men's Shot Put

Van Mounts (Bakersfield) is attempting to be the second

Californian ever over 70' with 68'08.75 1997 and 67'9.75 1998

bests. Fellow 60-footers, Danny Ames (El Capitan, Lakeside)

61'06 (nation's #2 soph in 1997), Vili Makihele (San Marcos)

60'07, super-soph Rhuben Williams (Eagle Rock, L.A.) 60'06.5,

Doug Sells (Shelton, Wa) 60'4, and Roy Rivas (Carlsbad) 60'01.5

will make this a very deep and talented event! Ten in the field

have bests of over 58 feet!

Event #63 - Men's Discus

The 1998 National Outdoor Leader, Reedus Thurmond (Serra,

Gardena) (192'10) will battle with occasional workout-mate, much

improved Richard Legarra (Wilson, Hacienda Heights) (186'2). Van

Mounts (Bakersfield), the nation's leading outdoor Shot Putter at

67'9.75, who has been out to 181'05 in the Discus. Danny Ames

(El Capitan, Lakeside) was the #2 soph thrower in the nation last

year in the Shot (61'06) and Discus (176-03), with Richard Fagan

(Greenway, Phoenix) (171'07) the top thrower in Arizona this

spring.
