Subject: t-and-f: Eastern HS Meet

Netters:
A resounding relay triple by Simon Gratz of Philadelphia featured
the Eastern HS track and field championships Tuesday night (Feb. 24) at the
168th St. Armory in Manhattan.
The triple included an upset of Columbia HS of Maplewood (NJ) in
the girls' 3200-meter relay, as well as close victories in the 800R and
1600R. The times were 1:42.34, 3:52.31 and 9:19.76. Columbia won the DMR in
12:10.19.
The meet was basically a contest between New York and New Jersey
schools with a smattering of such "outside" entries as Gratz. Once the
premiere HS meet on the Eastern HS schedule, it has for some years now been
overshadowed by the Nationals, which will be held this year at the Reggie
Lewis Center in Boston on March 14-15.
Todd Matthews of Notre Dame HS of Lawrenceville (NJ) was the meet's
only double individual winner. He took the 55H in 7.42 after a 7.37
semi-final and won the LJ at 22-3 1/4. Kevin DiGiorgio of Bayonne (NJ), who
had broken the state record with a 67-3 SP win at Sunday's state AG meet,
settled for a 63-11 win here. His female counterpart, Heather Colyer of
East Juniata, Pa., did not compete.
