But it wasn’t Greene answering the questions smoothly, it was Taft senior Jamere Holland. The wind was kicking up pretty hard so meet officials turned the sprinters around to run with the wind at their backs. The wind during the previous race was measured at 2.1m/s and seemed to be gusting quite a bit. The gun sounded and Holland jumped out to an early lead, holding it all the way through the tape, and as the crowd waited for the time to pop up on the board Holland seemed relaxed. Then 10.37 was announced and a just legal wind reading of 1.9 m/s. It was a career best. In the post race interview Holland talked about being out of shape. “I gained 15 pounds from last year. You can see my little belly,” he said as he pointed to his stomach. What can he do if he ever gets into shape? Holland is the best returning 100m runner in the country as he ran 10.38 last year while Rodney Glass of Notre Dame, the 2 nd best returner in the country with his 10.43 from last year, finished 2 nd in 10.48 seconds. And while there was a little bit of daylight between the two on this day, there will be many more chances to square off. Was this a statement day for Holland? Was he trying to send a message to rival Glass? “I was just trying to PR and I did that so I’m happy with it. It’s like a big rivalry but we’re still friends.” Men 100 Meter Dash Invitational ===================================================================== Name Year School Finals Wind ===================================================================== 1 Holland, Jamere 12 Taft H.S. 10.36 1.9 2 glass, rodney 12 notre dame h 10.48 1.9 3 Saine, Brandon 11 Piqua High S 10.54 1.9 4 Danns, Dax 12 Helix High S 10.68 1.9 5 Mays, Devin 12 Lincoln High 10.71 1.9 6 Williams, Jonathan 12 Tvhs Track 10.86 1.9 6 Island, Cameron 12 Skyline High 10.86 1.9 8 Rogers, Mark 11 Leuzinger H. 11.15 1.9 -- Green, Isaiah 11 Long Beach P DNF 1.9 -- Howell, Tran 12 Los Angeles SCR Men 100 Meter Dash Seeded ===================================================================== Name Year School Finals Wind ===================================================================== 1 Best, Jahvid 11 Salesian Hig 10.39 2.2 2 Patterson, Travon 12 Long Beach P 10.61 2.2 3 Driscoll, Dustin 12 Saint August 10.77 2.2 4 Waters, DeShawn 12 Hercules H.S 10.85 2.2 5 Belch, Danny 12 Torrey Pines 10.87 2.2 5 Smith, DeShawn 12 San Jacinto 10.87 2.2 7 Williams, Bryan 11 Valley View 10.88 2.2 8 Ned, Paul 11 Canyon Cross 10.90 2.2 9 Shaw, Curtis 11 Lincoln High 11.01 2.2 Men 200 Meter Dash Invitational ===================================================================== Name Year School Finals Wind ===================================================================== 1 Holland, Jamere 12 Taft H.S. 21.09 -1.1 2 Best, Jahvid 11 Salesian Hig 21.38 -1.1 3 Scheuerman, JT 12 Littleton Hi 21.46 -1.1 4 Mays, Devin 12 Lincoln High 21.85 -1.1 5 Danns, Dax 12 Helix High S 21.90 -1.1 6 Joseph, Vincent 12 Long Beach P 22.41 -1.1 -- Howell, Tran 12 Los Angeles SCR -1.1 -- Williams, Jonathan 12 Tvhs Track SCR -1.1 -- glass, rodney 12 notre dame h SCR -1.1 Men 200 Meter Dash Seeded ===================================================================== Name Year School Finals Wind ===================================================================== 1 Crichlow, Pearson 12 James Logan 21.90 -1.1 2 Smith, DeShawn 12 San Jacinto 22.18 -1.1 3 Island, Cameron 12 Skyline High 22.20 -1.1 4 McDonald, Dondre 11 Inglewood HS 22.22 -1.1 5 Christjaener, Justin 12 Edison 22.52 -1.1 6 Franklin, Johnathan 10 Dorsey High Scho 22.92 -1.1 -- Baker, Antwun 12 North Hollyw DQ -1.1 Lane Violation -- Scratched, #5 Scratched Athlet SCR -1.1 -- Fields, Brandon 12 Etiwanda Hig SCR -1.1 -- Hooks, Anthony 10 Brophy Prep. After helping LB Poly win the 4x100 Friday night the junior took to the track for the 400m, his first of 3 races on the night. Colorado one lapper JT Scheuerman set the pace, flying out over first 200m and really making Bryshon Nellum work. But Nellum remembered last year, when he lost on a lean in the same event, and he didn’t want that to happen again. At the start of the final 100m, it really looked like Scheuerman was going to steal the show from the local star, but with every stride that Nellum took, the crowd got louder and the lead got shorter. Still, with less than 30m left Nellum was still behind. He dug down and found just a little more, leaned at the tape, and not only won the race, but managed a meet record in the process. Not a bad start to the night. “Coming down the stretch I didn’t know if I was going to catch him. I just kept my strength and maintained my speed. As I got closer to the finish line I didn’t give up, I just kept going. I really wanted to win the race,” Nellum said. “I didn’t know if he won or I won but I tried to make sure I ran as far as possible to beat him,” he added. “I was just trying to run my race. I might have taken it out a little fast but I was just trying to do what I had to do to win,” Scheuerman said, though he added that he PR’d by half a second so he was happy. The Baylor bound senior should also be happy that his time of 46.24 now ranks him 3 rd best in meet history.Men 400 Meter Dash Invitational ================================================================ Name Year School Finals ================================================================ 1 Nellum, Bryshon 11 Long Beach P 46.20 2 Scheuerman, JT 12 Littleton Hi 46.24 3 Hall, De'Andre 12 Dominguez HS 47.74 4 Saine, Brandon 11 Piqua High S 48.29 5 Porter, Justin 12 Vista Murrie 48.31 6 Chandy, Zach 12 Sage Hill 48.38 7 Barton, Chris 11 notre dame h 48.75 8 Reed, Derrick 12 Carson High 49.09 9 Baker, Antwun 12 North Hollyw 49.96 -- Anderson, Nate 12 Benson High SCR -- Danns, Dax 12 Helix High S SCR Men 400 Meter Dash Seeded ================================================================ Name Year School Finals ================================================================ 1 Colvin, Robert 11 franklin hs 48.79 2 Gaspar, Don 12 Los Gatos Hi 49.25 3 Gallagher, Pat 12 Warwick Vall 49.45 4 Colllins, Jaime 11 Jordan High 49.64 5 Taylor, Gerren 12 Monte Vista 52.24 -- Williams, Aaron 12 Cajon High S DQ Lane Violation -- Ward, Jason 11 Bakersfield SCR -- Kroner, Garrett 12 Indian Hills SCR -- Gudaitis, Jeff 12 Tacoma Bapti SCR 800m - Scott Crawford pops a big one By Tim Fulton He wasn’t listed in the meet program. He didn’t lead the race for long. But when it was all said and done, Oak Ridge, CA senior Scott Crawford was the first to cross the line in 1:51.60. After Alejandro Vargas set the early pace, hitting the 200m in 26.5 and the 400m in 54.7, the pack started coming back to him on the back stretch of the final lap. Benicia’s Richard Jones challenged on the back stretch and with 100m to go there were still four athletes who had a chance to win. But with 75m left, Crawford, a tall, lean runner sporting a light beard, moved to the outside of lane 2 and kicked hard. His lifetime best was 1:55 scratch start/1:53 relay, but he was running like he didn’t know that. Judging by where he was after lap one, he had to have negative split the event. After the race Crawford talked about how his training had really improved. “I got really serious with my training this year, doing some really high mileage weeks, and working on my speed a bit. I guess my training is starting to pay off.” When told how fast he ran, Crawford said, “Wow. I was hoping for a 1:54, maybe 1:53.” The senior had been running the mile more lately. “I’m starting to think that maybe this is more my event,” he commented. Well, so is everyone else. Saturday, he gave a preview of what much of that race might look like. For most, Coe’s 4:08.14 looked like a strong, slightly erratically paced Between 660 and 880 yards, he took control of the race in the windy early evening conditions. To that point, the race had seen Crested Butte Academy CO Daniel Roberts and The next 660 got some buzz – big time. Unveiling a scary tempo that looked very June-like, the powerful senior ripped through the next three half-laps in 29.9 (2:34.7), 30.8 (3:05.5), and 30.0 (3:35.5). A mid-race 1:30.7! Could the fans see a 4:05? No. As it had for Annie St. Geme and others, a hard surge had taken its toll in such conditions. The last split of 32.7 toned the final result down to 4:08.14. Very good, but only a hint of what we’re going to see from Michael Coe, one thinks. “The start was a little slower than I would have liked, but I made my move exactly when I wanted to,” he said. “I wish I could have had a faster last lap, but I was really feeling it in my legs.” Meanwhile, Roberts had a very nice runner-up effort. Off of a lot of folks’ radar screens, he showed up here with just a Florida State Relays double (4:04 1500/9:37 3200 with 2:13 last 800) that hadn’t opened any eyes and no indoor races. His dropping back in the pack during the Coe surge might have looked like it was leading to a dismal finish, but instead he ran a very strong last lap, moving back into 2nd and gaining on the leader in the stretch. He wound up at 4:10.10, 2nd only to his 4:09.45 at NON last year.

The all black uniform had the orange letters to match the hair (probably the other way around). He looks every bit the part of an elite hurdler. Oh, and by the way, he’s got a stride that eats up the track like few I’ve ever seen. David Klech was born to hurdle. He won the 110m hurdles in 13.97 into a 1.1 m/s head wind, winning the event by .26, which is a lot in the world of 110m hurdles. But what he did in the 300m hurdles was just plain nasty. He shot out of the blocks as if he thought he was running the 110m race and just kept going. The talk around the finish line was whether he could break the meet record of 36.28 he set here last year. Most didn’t think he could run under 36 seconds on the chilly-for-California night. But the way he blasted the last straight away, it looked pretty clear that something special was happening. Most times in track and field, the best kids make it look easy. It can be very hard to tell if someone is running fast enough for a record. But with Klech, you could tell he was flying. When the clock finally did stop, it said 35.45, shattering the meet record and moving Klech all the way up to US#4 all time, a mere 0.13 of a second off George Porter’s US and California record of 35.32 set in 1985. Boys 110 Hurdles: Klech whets our appetite too When Indeed, the longer hurdle races are his specialty on the track, but he’s hardly shabby down the straight. With the wind beating a 1.8 path into his face, he still got a fabulous start and ducked under 14 with a fine 13.97, 0.26 seconds up on Alhambra CA jr. Zion Babb’s 14.23. “I didn’t run quite perfect race,” he analyzed shortly thereafter. “I let up on my form somewhat in the last half. But it went really great over the first three hurdles. “I’ve been really working on my start and focusing on my form,” he added. “My start was the weakest part of my race last year. A lot of people just think of me as an intermediate hurdler.” Men 110 Meter Hurdles Invitational ===================================================================== Name Year School Finals Wind Two attributes usually reserved for seasoned veterans. But there he was in the midst of one of the longest jump offs I’ve ever seen, looking relaxed and under control. Jordan McPhersen had one heck of a day. McPherson, a junior from Wayne, OH, had a career best of 6’07” coming into the meet. And not only did he have to overcome the long trip, nerves, and the deepest competition he’s ever seen, but he had to face a jumper from Long Beach Poly, in a jump off, practically in his back yard. McPherson tied his career best and got more and more confident with each jump. Finally there were just two athletes over 6’08” and the jump off began. Back and forth they went as the bar went up and down from 6’08” to 6’09”. On the 8 th round hey both cleared 6’09”, and the bar went to 6’10”. They both missed. Back to 6’09”. McPhersen cleared it and waited. Poly didn’t and the battle was over. McPhersen seemed to know just how to handle the situation. “You don’t worry about the other jumper. I was (jumping) first. My main concern was getting over the first height. If he made it, you focus on the next height. You got to zone everything out and take it one step at a time.” Men High Jump ========================================================================== Name Year School Finals ========================================================================== 1 McPherson, Jordan 11 Wayne High S 6-09.00 2.05m 2 Austin, Terrence 12 Long Beach P J6-09.00 2.05m 3 Armstrong, Nicholas 12 Long Beach P 6-07.00 2.00m 3 Girten, David 12 Damien HS 6-07.00 2.00m 3 Feinberg, Phil 11 Corona del S 6-07.00 2.00m 6 Arrivey, Trent 12 Woodinville J6-07.00 2.00m 7 Andrews, Dustin 12 Lee's Summit J6-07.00 2.00m 8 Sebastian, Tim J.W.North High S 6-05.00 1.95m 9 Harden, David 12 North Hollyw J6-05.00 1.95m 10 Black, Alex 12 Downey High J6-05.00 1.95m 11 Nelson, Ben 12 Vacaville Hi J6-05.00 1.95m 12 Sheppard, Brandon 12 San Ramon Va J6-05.00 1.95m 12 Thomas, Chase 12 Lutheran (Or J6-05.00 1.95m 14 Hobson, Taylor 11 Upland HS J6-05.00 1.95m 15 Adams, Brandon 12 San Ramon Va J6-05.00 1.95m 16 Till, Garrett 11 South Torran 6-03.00 1.90m 17 Dompier, Daniel 12 Cedar High Schoo J6-03.00 1.90m 18 Clarke, Jonathan 11 Loyola High 6-01.00 1.85m -- Jensen, Keith 12 Rancho Berna NH -- Lu, Xiao 11 Temple City NH -- Arnold, Stephan 12 Colony High NH Morse ( Savage started his day in 3rd place in the disc as his first-round 188-11 trailed The shot was much tighter. Savage took the lead in the first round at 58-5.5, with Ferris ( Round five finally saw some 60-footers. “The emotion he had,” said Coach and father Robert Savage when asked what it was that ignited that 200 footer in the first event. “He gave a big yell and it took off. He had good speed, good lift, good elevation. It’s good when he can bring the emotion.” The disc is indeed the best event for Darius, he added, but “he wants to work on the shot.”
