Hammer Throw
John Freeman RI 215-10, Ashley Muffet OH 171-5
Boys - Girls - Walter Henning is no longer "horrible"
Boys
Pete Cava's report
For safety purposes, the competition took place just outside the track beyond the second turn. An estimated 150 spectators trekked over to watch seven of the nation’s top eleven preps in action.
Super sophomore Walter Henning of St. Anthony’s in Huntington, N.Y., the national high school leader at 226-6, took the lead with a his first heave, measured at 213-3. Henning, thid here in 2004, improved to 213-4 on his second attempt.
In the third round, however, a throw of 215-10 by John Freeman of Bishop Hendricken High School (Warwick, RI) knocked Henning out of the lead. Freeman came in as the seaon’s No. 2 prep at 224-11.
At the halfway mark Freeman, last year’s fourth placer, was atop the standings followed by Henning and Princeton recruit Alex Pessala (Chaminade, Mineola, NY), who threw 201-11 in the first round.
Pessala improved to 209-9 in the fifth round, but there would be no more changes in the standings. Freeman’s 215-10 stood up for the win while Henning – the 2005 third-place finisher – settled for second at 213-4 while Pessala came in third.
“I practiced for this my whole school career, said Freeman, a Texas native who’ll throw for Northeastern next year. “When I got in there, I just said ‘This is it, this is what I’ve been waiting for – a chance to win at Nike’”
Freeman knew there were no guarantees in this loaded field. “Each time I stepped in, I was trying to make a special throw,” he said. “These are the best throwers in the nation. You never know when they’re going to throw one way out here.”
soph Walter Henning is no longer "horrible"
by Elliott Denman
Walter Henning's world keeps spinning merrily along.
Round and round he goes, muscling his 12-pound ball-and-chain
humongous distances. How far he'll eventually whirl that favorite
implement no one can even guess.
And that's just fine with this 6-foot 2-inch, 197-pound sophomore at
St. Anthony's High School of South Huntington, Long Island, New York.
He's enjoying every spin of this journey. Where his hammer
at last plunks down from the sky is just part of it. It's the training,
it's the discipline of it all, it's the command of this most technical of
throwing events, it's the progress he sees every time he steps into
the ring that motivates him on and on and on.
"I was pretty horrible when I started out," he admits. "I was all over the
place."
That was back in 2002. He's no longer "horrible." He's no longer "all over the place."
He's right on target as the national freshman and sophomore record-holder with a
string of rapidly-zooming PR's to his credit.
He hurled the 12-pound hammer 144-2 as an eighth-grader,
reached 193-2 for a national freshman record in 2004, and heading into the
championship phase of his second-year high school campaign has already
reached 226-6.
"He's getting better all the time; no one knows how good he can be," said
Marty Engel, the 1952 hammer throwing Olympian out of NYU and USA
national record-breaker in 1953 who has coached Henning from his first
awkward winds and spins.
"But right now he's got to learn how to control
his speed, that's the big thing," said Engel. "He's quick, quicker than most.
He turns very quickly, but he's got to keep it controlled speed. Speed can kill
in the hammer. That's going to be the key.
"Sometimes I have to slow him down. Sometimes you have to do that to
advance to the next step. It's all a learning process, and Walter
knows that. But he's got all the marbles going for him.
He could be a fantastic thrower."
Henning gets additional coaching from John McCree, the former St. John's
hammer man and Manhattan College and Queens College coach, who is
a part-time coach at St. Anthony's.
"He's a gifted athlete, a real prodigy, but he's got to get stronger," said McCree
of Henning, a relative newcomer to weight training.
Still, Henning's performances in the weight room are moving up quickly, too.
He's bench pressed 225 pounds, and performed sets of four power-clean reps
at 210, four power snatches at 140, and four squats at 465.
Long Island track fans got some big clues about Henning's progress last winter.
After tossing the 25-pound weight 38 feet as an eighth-grader and 56-6 3/4
as a freshman, he unleashed a monster heave of 75 feet and half an inch
as a sophomore, just past his 16th birthday. It was his first national soph record
and put him eighth all-time in the nation.
Clearly, next winter he'll be targeting Leif Arrhenius's national junior-class
25-pound weight record set for Mountain View High of Orem, Utah in 2003.
The hammer may be an official state-championship event only in Rhode Island,
but Henning still counts himself fortunate. He lives in an "enclave" of
hammer interest where Shore AC's Jim Heizman, fifth-placer in the 2004 Olympic
Trials, is another resource, and there are a growing number of high school
competition opportunities.

Girls
Elliott Denman's report
Ashley Muffet had never competed in the hammer throw before, but
the Ashland College-bound North Canton, Ohio senior uncorked a 171-5 in the final round to best a 22-thrower field.
Far out of reach were the National (201-7) and meet (187-10) records held by Maureen Griffin of Pocatello, Idaho but Muffet was the clearcut class of the 2005 Nike field.
Trailing her from a distance were Kim Williams, Douglasvlle, Ga. junior, at 166-6, and Megan Maloney, Barringto, RI senior, at 155-4. Allison Horner, the highly promising Marietta, Ga. freshman, landed sixth at 147-8.
Seven of the 22 exceeded 140 feet.
Muffet already looks ahead to Kent State, where she'll train with coach Jud Logan, the Olympian and former U.S. record-holder.
"I didn't have anything to lose on my first few throws; but I slowed down just to get a mark and move into the finals," said Muffet. "My last throw was my best throw."
A top shot putter as well, Muffet turned to that event a few hours later.
"Joy Kamani (associate meet director) actually saved my life because I wasn't entered in the hammer (initially) and she wanted me to concentrate on the shot. But Joy took care of it and got me entered in the hammer, too."
