Both Matusak and Yetzer outkick favored runners. Matusak appeared finished when Barnicle pulled away on the last lap. But Matusak rallied on the turn, and when Barnicle drifted out at the head of the stretch, Matusak went inside and came through on the rail for the win. Eric Giddings ME led through a half mile in 2:13.5, giving way to Chris Rombough WI, who led the pack through a mile in 4:27. Chris Barnicle took over in lap 6 and appeared headed for the win until Matusak's late heroics. Yetzer's win was even more of a surprise, except to those who were paying attention last week in Minnesota for the last state meet of the season. Yetzer doubled there in 4:47.12 and 10:16.59 SR for 1600/3200. Nicole Blood NY led a close pack through a mile in 5:14.5 but faded after the fifth lap. When 2004 Foot Locker cross country national champion Aislinn Ryan took the lead on lap 7, most observors thought it was over. But they didn't think about Yetzer, who moved smartly to the lead on the backstretch of the last lap and won with authority. "It was great running with all those great girls. I was concerned the pace was too fast the first six laps. But I just try to do my best and glorify God." [John Dye] |

Mark Matuszak zipped past Chris Barnicle in the final forty meters for a surprising victory. The University of California-bound Matuszak (Loyola, Los Angeles, CA) won convincingly in 8:51.13. Barnicle (Newton North, Newtonville, MA), a future Arkansas Razorback, wound up second in 8:52.19.
Coming into the Nike Outdoor Nationals, Barnicle had been the year’s fastest prep with a time of 8:56.20.
Eric Giddings (South Portland, ME) took an early lead in the race. By the third lap it was Chris Rombough (Fremont, WI,), Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, MI) and Matuszak in a tightly-bunched pack. Rombough, the Minnesota recruit, kept the lead until the sixth lap, when Barnicle moved out in front of a jam-tight pack.
With a 65.2 seventh-lap split, Barnicle began to open a lead followed by Williams and Rombough. Matuszak appeared to lag behind this trio, but found another gear coming into the homestretch. Matuszak began picking off the leaders, and heading toward the finish he zipped past Barnicle on the inside.
It was an early birthday present for Matuszak, who turns 19 in ten days. “He left the inside open, so I took it,” said the Californian. “Tonight was pretty tough, but the weather helped a lot. You can’t ask for better weather than this.”
Matuszak’s all-out effort left him drained. “I didn’t know I had that much left,” he said, “because my legs were going.”
Rombough wound up third in 8:54.94, with Williams fourth in 8:56.04.

"This is one of the greatest fields of two runners we've ever seen," announcer Doug Speck told the crowd.
Best of them all, though, was Lakeville, Minnesota junior Elizabeth Yetzer.
When she crossed the line in 10:15.73, Speck declared "a star is born."
Yetzer's 66.7 final lap separated her from all of her pursuers.
"This is definitely the biggest victory of my career thus far," she said.
"It's very special. I just tried to stay on the inside lane with (Bellvale, NY
junior) Aislinn Ryan (runner-up in 10:20.02.) She made a move on the fifth or sixth lap and I followed her. Then I took the lead with about 300 left.
"It was just a neat experience."
Two more juniors, Kelly Parrish of Ocala, Florida (10:22.74) and Jenny Morgan of Clarkston, Michigan (10:24.23) nabbed the 3-4 spots, ahead of Leeds, North Dakota senior Krista Anderson (10:24.61.)
Nicole Blood of Gansevoort, NY, winner of the 2004 Nike mile crown in 4:42:40 for Kinetic Track Club of Saratoga Springs, led the pack through a 5:14.8 first mile but wound up seventh over-all in 10:32.72.
College Station, Texas junior Jocelyn Gardner (10:30.63) cruised to a first-section win, taking sixth over-all.
