J-Mee Samuels (left) completed a sprint double at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, and the Mount Tabor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) High School graduate did it in style. Samuels, winner of Friday’s 100m, raced home in 20.76, breaking the meet record of Xavier Carter.
Samuels, this year’s prep leader at 20.32, had a fine start in lane four and was a clear leader after about 75 meters. Dominique Worsley, running next door in lane five, challenged heading into the straightaway. But Worlsey’s surge just seemed to fuel Samuels’ determination. Worsley’s time was 20.92, a career best. Third place went to 400m winner Justin Oliver in 21.09 with junior Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA), running in lane eight, taking fourth in 21.27. “I’m satisfied,” said Samuels, who’ll run for NCAA team champion Arkansas next year. “Other people don’t faze me. No matter who I run against, I’m going out there to win. I wish I could have run faster. That wasn’t my PR, but I got the meet record. I think I had an advantage this weekend because I was so close to home.” The wind reading was 1.2 meters per second. text and photo by John Dye |

After Florida soph Brittany Jones took Alexandria Anderson's US#1 ranking away with a blazing 23.20 qualifier, Anderson roared back in the final to reclaim US#1 with a time of 23.05, just 0.02 off the meet record. Jones improved on her prelim time with a 23.13 runner-up effort, good for US#2 on the year.

Once again, Chicago senior Alexandria Anderson bested Pompano Beach, Florida sophomore Brittany Jones.
They ran 1-3 in the 100-meter final Friday night and 1-2 in this one.
And their pace was wicked.
Anderson's 23.05 was just 2/100ths off the Nike meet record (Sanya Richards' 23.03 for Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in 2002.)
Jones was just 8/100ths back in 23.13 and all but seventh-placer Sade Wiliams of Fontana, California (24.25) broke 24 seconds.
