60 meters
J-Mee Samuels NC, Nate Yorks CO, Trindon Holliday LA, Trenton Guy NC, Ahmad Rashad MI, Jonathan Hancock NC, Darrius Heyward-Bey MD

J-Mee Samuels, the North Carolinian with the fireplug body, signalled he was headed for greatness 3 years ago when he set a national freshman class record for the 200 meters of 20.99. Then his career was derailed last year when he was suspended from his Mount Tabor NC team for an undisclosed incident involving another student. Samuels got going again last summer in Junior Olympics competition and ended the season US#1 for 100 meters with a 10.25 +1.5 in June, followed by a scary wind assisted 10.07 +3.6 100m at ECI Blunt in July. Samuels was second here two years ago by 0.01 after leading the field through prelims and semis. He may not be denied this time as he leads the country in both 55m (6.32) and 60m (6.72) .

But Samuels is in for a big fight. For starters, there are two in-state rivals from West Charlotte as the North Carolina state meet produced three of the top four times in the US this season -- Jonathan Hancock 6.31 US#3 and Trenton Guy 6.32 US#4 were second and third behind Samuels. Littleton CO sr Nate Yorks 6.80 60m US#2 ran second to Samuels in the 60 meters at Simplot in a race that produced the nation's two fastest times of the season. York left Idaho hungry for another shot at the Tarheel, and the Mile High State sprinter says this one is to determine who is "King of the Hill." Also lurking in the wings are Flint MI jr Ahmad Rashad 6.82 60m US#3, Louisiana champion Trindon Holliday 6.26 55m US#2, and Maryland independent school champion Darrius Heyward-Bey 6.35 55m US#6.

Ahmad Rashad MI, J-Mee Samuels NC

Flint MI jr Ahmad Rashad 21.46 and Mt. Tabor NC sr J-Mee Samuels 21.47 are the top two in the nation this season. They got there on the same day last month. Samuels went to the top of the charts at Simplot, only to have Rashad top him at the U-Kentucky Invitational. Samuels won here 2 years ago in 21.76.

Justin Oliver GA, Afolabi Aromire MD

Redan GA sr Justin Oliver lost to J-Mee Samuels in the Simplot Games 200 meters, and then took out his frustration in the 400 meters, winning in 47.68, fastest in the country this season. Oliver was 4th here last year. Oliver ran 46.71 US#11 outdoors last summer and beat indoor record holder Elzie Coleman at Mobile. C.H. Flowers MD sr Afolabi Aromire, another Prince George's County star who is very familiar with the Sportsplex, didn't run the 400 indoors, but bracketed it with top times in the 300m (34.35 US#6) and 500m (1:03.52 US#1).

Michael Pachella NJ, E.C. Gibbs VA, Evan Bardach IN

Wallkill Valley NJ jr Mike Pachella improved his season best by 3 seconds when he got into a fast race at Eastern States. Pachella was third in 1:53.44 US#3 behind Brian Scotland NJ 1:52.47 US#1 and Sean Tully NY 1:52.65 US#2. Now we will see if Pachella can run that fast as the top seed. Scotland is running at NSIC in New York, and Tully is here, but he is concentrating on relay duty with his national 4x800 record setting Syosset NY team. Alabama champion Cullman AL sr E.C. Gibbs is US#4 at 1:53.9, and Carmel IN sr Evan Bardach won the U-Kentucky Invitational in 1:54.07 US#5.

Mile
Laef Barnes WA, Andrew Bumbalough TN, Ken Cormier AZ, Cody Harper NM, Ian Boyle MI

Mead WA sr Laef Barnes is the favorite over a very solid field. Barnes travelled coast to coast to win the Boston Indoor Games junior elite mile with a killer kick in 4:13.61. Then he improved to 4:12.00 US#1 at the U-Washington Open. Douglas AZ sr Ken Cormier came from nowhere to win the Foot Locker cross championship in December. Then he added some speed work to his 80-mile a week regimen and won a mile in 4:15.30 US#6 at the Albuquerque Invitational (first indoor meet in Albuquerque in 17 years), but slipped to 4:16.30 for 5th at the Boston Indoor after being snowbound in Boston for a week. Brentwood Academy TN sr Andrew Bumbalough's biggest claim to fame is his brilliant 8:49.87 2-mile at Arcadia last April. Bumby prepped for this meet with a 1:54.42 800m US#8 as runner-up to Evan Bardach at the U-Kentucky Invitational. Cody Harper is best known for leading Albuquerque Academy's NTN finalist cross country team, but he is showing prowess on the track this season. After finishing behind Cormier in the Albuquerque Invitational in 4:18.01, Harper moved ahead of his more celebrated Southwest rival at the Boston Indoor, finishing 4th in 4:15.32 US#7. Pinckney MI sr Ian Boyle got everyone's attention with his Michigan MITS state championship win last week in 4:14.45 US#9.

2-Mile
Daniel LaCava TX, Ken Cormier AZ, Kenny Klotz OR

Grace Prep Arlington TX sr Daniel LaCava is US#2 with his 9:14.86 win in the Arkansas High School Invitational in January. He ran sixth in the Boston Indoor Games mile in 4:17.01 US#11. Douglas AZ sr Ken Cormier rates top three seeding with his Foot Locker Cross Country championship in December. He is also entered in the mile (above), so he will probably choose to drop one of these events as they are scheduled barely 2 hours apart on Sunday afternoon. Central Catholic Portland OR jr Kenny Klotz put himself in the medal picture with a 4:13.10 mile US#2 at the U-Washington Last Chance meet last week against college runners. Klotz was Oregon state champion and a Foot Locker finalist (24th) in cross country.

Scott Sellers TX, Ryan Fritz PA, Juan Cave PA

The tall, blond Texan stands tall in this event. Cinco Ranch Katy TX sr Scott Sellers has ruled this event nationally since winning the outdoor championship at Raleigh as a sophomore in 2003. He set the indoor national record here last year at 7-5.25, breaking a 26-year-old record. He leads the country this season at 7-5, with only two indoor meets. The two Pennsylvanians will try to keep up, but the odds are they can't. Fritz is the only other jumper to hit 7 feet this season. Cave was runner-up to Sellers last year.

Girls

60 meters
Sarah Matthews CO, Tenille Wilson AL, Francena McCorory VA, Clarenchell Tate PA

Tony Wells' Colorado Flyers club is a perennial threat on the girls national sprint scene. His Ashley Owens set a national record in this event at Simplot last year and won here before moving on to Louisiana State University. Enter Sarah Griffen Matthews. The Niwot CO junior is US#2t at 55m this year (6.94), US#7 at 60m (7.54) and US#1 in LJ 20-8.5. She was a bit off her game at Simplot, so she should be itching to make amends here, but she has her hands full with Tenille Wilson AL, Francena McCorory VA, Clarenchell Tate PA and Janessa Murphy PA.
Tenille Wilson AL - 2005 indoor: won Alabama 6A 55m and Carl Lewis Inv 60m - 6.99 55m US#5 - 7.52 60m US#4. . 2004 outdoor: 11.95 and 24.46.
Francena McCorory VA - Busy season as ace of coach Eddie Williams' Virginia AAA champion Bethel squad. 2005 indoor: undefeated at 55m and 300m - 6.97 55m US#4 - 37.60 300m US#1 (Bishop Loughlin Games). 2004 outdoor: Virginia AAA 100/200 double - season bests of 11.83w 100m and 24.25 200m
Clarenchell Tate PA - Former age group star is making an impact in her freshman year with the big girls. 2005 indoor: Won Hispanic Games 200m - 7.04 55m US#9, 7.53 60m US#5, 24.26 200m US#5
Janessa Murphy PA - Beat Tate in Pennsylvania State Meet in 7.57 60m US#8.

200 meters
Bianca Knight MS, Sade Williams CA, Krista Simkins PA, Clarenchell Tate PA

Ridgeland MS soph Bianca Knight is the heavy favorite after blitzing Simplot in 23.70 from the "slow" section. (She had a 12-hour ordeal getting to Idaho and ran too slow in the heats to make the seeded section of the 3-section finals.) That time is US#1 this year, US#2 all time indoors for a sophomore and US#11 all time for any class. In 2004 outdoors as a freshman, Knight won far and wide at 100, 200 and 400 meters, with a 100-200 double at Mobile and a 200-400 double at both USATF Jr Olympics and USATF Youth intermediate divisions. 2004 outdoor season bests: 11.56 100m, 23.06 200m US#3 and 52.96 400m US#4.
Sade Williams CA - Like most California runners, lightly raced indoors. Was 3rd in Simplot 200m at 24.28 US#6 and was a key runner for the West Coast Heat (Rancho Cucamonga CA). 2004 outdoor: 23.67 +2.1 200m, 53.54 400m US#6.
Krista Simkins PA - 200-400 double in PTFCA Carnival, won Hall of Fame Classic 400m in NY. Season bests: 24.23 200m US#4 and 54.63 400m US#3.
Clarenchell Tate PA - won Hispanic Games. Season best: 24.26 US#5.

400 meters
Bianca Knight MS, Sade Williams CA, Andria Smallwood DC, Sharelle Green CT, Shakirra Pinnock VA

Knight "only" got 4th in the Simplot Games 400m, running alone in the "slow" section (see 200m above for explanation). Her time of 55.81 was her season best. Her outdoor credentials stamp her the favorite, however, as she ran 52.96 US#4 as a freshman last year and she was champion of Mobile, Mississippi 4A, USATF Jr Olympics (intermediate) and USATF Youth (intermediate). Knight was 3rd here last year.

Andria Smallwood DC - doubled 300/500 in DC championships. Season bests: 39.51 300m US#8, 1:15.10 500m US#6.
Sharelle Green CT - 300m champ at Yale and the Connecticut Open, and 2nd at New England Championships.
Shakirra Pinnock VA - another fast one from Bethel VA; undefeated this season at 500 meters, winning at Virginia Tech and the Virginia AAA state meet; owns 4th best time in the nation (1:14.85).

800 meters
Sarah Bowman VA, Katie Doswell VA, Geena Gall MI, Brittany Sheffey NY

Four sub-2:10 runners, and they are only half of the members of that high octane club this season, as the others are at the NSIC in New York this weekend. So expect super races in both places.

Sarah Bowman VA - It's been an up and down career for Sarah in the last 18 months, with injury, coaching changes, on and off and on again with her high school team. It was definitely up 2 weeks ago in the Virginia AA state meet, when she set a new national indoor record in the 1000 meters at 2:43.40. That was 10 seconds faster than she ran the same event at the Armory Collegiate Games in New York on Feb 5, but she was racing then less than 24 hours after finishing second in the Millrose Games mile. It should be noted that Bowman was the fastest in the country at 800 meters in the 2004 outdoor season, winning AOC Raleigh in 2:04.94.
Katie Doswell VA - Katie climaxed a meteoric rise from obscurity to national prominence this season when she beat Bowman and Sheffey and others in the junior elite invitational 1000m at the Armory Collegiate Games Feb 5 in 2:47.21, then US#2 all time in that event. Later, she entered the USA Indoor Championships in Boston and ran 2:08.86 US#4 in a heat.
Geena Gall MI - You can hardly overlook Geena. She is the defending NIN champion, but it will take better than last year's 2:12.20 to win it this year. She proved she can do it by winning the MITS state championship in Michigan last week in 2:08.77 US#3.
Brittany Sheffey NY - Already the star of Bellport NY as a freshman a year ago, Brittany is faster and more mature this year. She has the US#5 time of the season at 2:09.94 while finishing second in the Eastern States.

Mile
Nicole Blood NY, Sarah Bowman VA, Katie Doswell VA, Caitlin Lane NY

How about two of the favorites from the same team? Saratoga NY has Nicole Blood, a 5-year veteran and still only a junior, and freshman Caitlin Lane. Blood was second to Katelyn Kaltenbach CO here last year in the fastest mile of the season, but her time of 4:46.13 was a national sophomore class record. Blood added the outdoor sophomore class record last June while winning AOC Raleigh in 4:42.40, fastest in the nation in the 2004 outdoor season. Blood was fourth in the Millrose Games mile last month behind Bowman's second and Aislinn Ryan's first, but Nicole broke out of Ryan's shadow last week by beating her in the New York state meet in the fastest 3000 meter race of the season. Lane is US#1 at 1500 meters (4:33.40).

Sarah Bowman VA - It could be over at the start if Bowman duplicates her blazing front running victory at the Penn Relays last spring (4:48.55).
Katie Doswell VA - No one knows how fast she can run, not even her coach, Ben Ackerly, who says Katie has risen so fast so quickly that it is all natural ability so far. But he thinks the 1500m or mile might be her best event.

Katelyn Kaltenbach CO, Lindsey Ferguson NY, Brittanny Sedberry NJ, Kate Niehaus SC

Smoky Hill Aurora CO sr Katelyn Kaltenbach is in the last year of a great high school career. She comes in with no indoor races this year, but that didn't stop her from winning the mile here last year over Nicole Blood. All of our favorites are Foot Locker cross country finalists at least once. Defending champion Laura Cummings of Bay Shore NY is sidelined with injuries.

Lindsey Ferguson NY - was second to Cummings last year. She is US#4 this year at 1500m, US#7 at one mile, and US#3 at 3000m.
Brittany Sedberry NJ - won the Hall of Fame Classic 2-mile in New York in 10:37.02, fastest in the country this season.
Kate Niehaus SC - was fourth here last year. Lightly raced with no real indoor season in South Carolina, she dipped under 10 minutes for 3000 meters at Clemson Feb 26 for US#6 in that event.

Mullen Denver CO sr Kira Robinson, another Colorado Flyer coached by Tony Wells, is the clear favorite after her smashing win at Simplot in 8.34, just 0.01 off the national record. She is also US#2 in the 55m version. Western Baltimore MD jr Theresa Lewis is unbeaten this season, US#1 at 55H, and champion of Virginia Tech and Maryland 4A-3A. High Jump
Nicole Smith PA, Lauren Biscardi NY, Chelsea Taylor CO, Raevan Harris AL, Erin Hannon PA

The five top jumpers of the season are here, with McDowell Erie PA sr Nicole Smith US#1 at 5-10.5 and the others within a half inch. Smith is also entered in the long jump and triple jump. Bradford PA jr Erin Hannon was second behind fellow Pennsylvanian Smith in all three events at the PA state meet. She will try HJ and TJ here. Shoreham Wading River NY sr Lauren Biscardi is defending champion and has lost only once this year. Montbello CO sr Chelsea Taylor was second here last year and hit 6-0 outdoors last June winning the Great Southwest Classic. Raevan Harris hit a PR winning the Alabama state 5A title.

Elyria OH jr Christina Madison is the younger sister of 2002 champion Tianna Madison, now at the University of Tennessee. Buffalo Gap VA jr Angela Jenkins was 5th here last year.

Triple Jump
Queen Harrison VA, Nicole Smith PA, Decontee Kaye CA, Erin Hannon PA

No 40-footers here yet -- even competition will probably push one of these over the 40-foot mark. James Logan CA sr Decontee Kaye gets away from national record holder Brittany Daniels, also of Northern California, who is jumping at NSIC New York. The versatile Nicole Smith, entered in all three jumping events, may have her best chance for a gold medal in this one.

Pole Vault
Mary Saxer NY, Allison Stokke CA, Lindsay Regan PA

Lancaster NY sr Mary Saxer is the first 14-footer in the US high school ranks. She broke the old national indoor record three times, and the third time was the charm for the 14-foot barrier. Saxer will travel to Maryland after competing in the NSIC meet on Friday and Saturday. She was also the New York state champion in long jump, but will concentrate on PV here. If Saxer is even a bit off her game, she will get strong challenges from Newport Harbor CA soph Allison Stokke and Easton PA jr Lindsay Regan. Stokke now holds the national record for both freshmen and sophomores after clearing 13-4 a week ago in the early starting California outdoor season. Regan just won the PA state meet at 13-0 and was second here last year on misses as she had the same height (12-9.5) as Danielle O'Reilly, but accumulated an amazing seven misses along the way.

Shot Put
Michaela Wallerstedt NE, Ashley Muffet OH, Kamorean Hayes NC, Karen Shump PA

Top three throwers in the country are here. Burke Omaha NE sr Michaela Wallerstedt won all the honors last year and is US#1 this year at 47-4.5 in her Simplot win. Hoover OH sr Ashley Muffet 46-10.5 US#2 has been consistent in the 45-46 foot range all season. Penncrest PA freshman Karen Shump came up big in the PA state meet with a PR 45-4.75 US#3. We have no indoor marks on Harding NC soph Kamorean Hayes, but she earns #3 seed off her great freshman year last spring when she was NC state champ and 6th in the country at 48-9.5. Hayes finished 2nd to Wallerstedt here last year.

Weight Throw
Kim Williams GA

The top seven seeds are the top seven throwers in Bob Gourley's List of national rankings in this event. Douglasville GA jr Kim Williams 56-1.75 has a 30-inch lead on the pack, but the next six are all better than 49 feet: Tara Cooper OH 53-5, Emily Sanders GA 53-3, Emily Bernhardt GA 51-5, Ashley Muffet OH 51-4, Megan Maloney RI 50-7.25 and Kelley Moore OH 49-2. The event appears much stronger this year as defending champion Moore is throwing 5 feet better than her winning throw last year (44-5.25).

4x200
Bethel VA, Hermitage VA, Eleanor Roosevelt MD (Blazin Raiders), Rancho Cucamonga CA

This is a border war with Eleanor Roosevelt winning the Maryland 4A title in this same building, which is less than 10 miles from the school, and Bethel winning the Virginia AAA title just across the Potomac at George Mason. Rancho Cucamonga is one of the top teams in California -- enough said. Bethel is US#2, Eleanor Roosevelt US#5 and Hermitage US#8.

Running as the West Coast Heat, Rancho Cucamonga was in the mix throughout the Simplot Games last month, winning silver in the 4x400 and bronze in the SMR. Their 3:49.45 4x400 is 3rd best in the nation this season. Eleanor Roosevelt is US#4 on its Virginia Tech win in 3:52.01. They and Bethel each have wins at the PG Sportsplex this season.

4x800
Saratoga NY (Kinetic Running Club), Eleanor Roosevelt MD (Blazin Raiders)

By the time of this race at 3:45 pm Sunday, the legendary Saratoga NY squad, national cross countlry champion at Nike Team Nationals and with four runners in the Foot Locker national finals, could be shooting for a third record -- meet or national. Nicole Blood, Lindsey Ferguson and Caitlin Lane are listed in all three events, and each is in an individual event as well, so fatigue could be a factor by this race. Eleanor Roosevelt MD ran fourth in the greatest high school 4x800 ever run at the Armory Collegiate Games in New York Feb 5; their time of 9:06.75 is US#4 this year and US#6 all time. Saratoga is US#4 with their New York State Meet win last week in 9:12.37.

Here are the three distance relays for Saratoga, the records, and Saratoga's runners:

4xMile - 210pm Saturday - Meet record 20:08.72 - National 20:08.72
Nicole Blood, Lindsey Ferguson, Caitlin Lane, Karyn Delay, Hannah Davidson

4xMile
Saratoga NY (Kinetic Running Club)

Saratoga's only competition is themselves. Their B team is second seeded in this race and should finish second, just as they did last year when the A team set the national record of 20:08.72, taking 14 seconds off the old record. Saratoga is better this year, so the only suspense will be whether they break 20 minutes. That should be a lock, with every runner capable of going under 5 minutes and Nicole Blood the best miler in the US last season. The third seed is young Mountain Brook AL, with an all-freshman crew and a seed time more than a minute behind Saratoga. But, you still have to run the race, and it will be up to the announcer to keep the crowd informed about the splits..

Distance Medley
Saratoga NY (Kinetic Running Club)

Defending champion Saratoga is US#1 with their 11:47.29 win at Yale in January. Earlier, they won at Brown without their ace, Nicole Blood.

Sprint Medley
Eleanor Roosevelt MD (Blazin Raiders), Hopewell Valley NJ, James Logan CA, Ballou DC

Home team could get the win here, but they will have their hands full with Hopewell Valley NJ US#3, James Logan CA US#5, and DC champion Ballou. James Logan was 3rd here last year and Ballou 6th.
