100m girls

Natasha Hastings NY wins in meet record 11.61

400m specialist Hastings (and sporting a bleach blond hairdo) got a tremendous start in lane 3 over Austin in lane 4 and Bianca Knight in lane 4. Austin tried desperately to catch Hastings, but to no avail. Knight who looked easy in winning her prelim in 11.80, could not gain on Austin or Hastings. Austin claimed second in 11.70, and Knight 3 rd in 11.82.

Jenny Barringer sets meet record in 3000m

Beau Burroughs wins shot put

Boys Shot Put

Beau Burroughs- Tampa Jesuit, Shot put and Discus Champion:

"The competition was here. Mother nature decided that it wasn’t going to be a super day of competition. She made in hard on everybody. Everybody got tired from the delays. When the rain stopped, the humidity tackled everybody. It was like a punch in the face. It was hard to regroup after the delays. Still the competition was here, but it just was going to be an ugly day, not matter what.

"It (discus) was the closest competition since Stockbarger whipped me at the Florida Relays (laughing). The final rounds, I brought myself together and made a decent day out of nothing. No one was going to throw far here. Even Stockbarger last year didn’t throw well. For some reason, this place does not have big throws in the disc. Stockbarger threw 167 last year and Garret (Johnson. Now at Florida State) never threw over 180. It’s like unholy ground or something.
I’m going to Golden West(In Sacramento, CA) next week in the shot. I’m really looking forward to that. This is probably my last meet in the disc. I’m probably not going to train too much for the disc after today. I’m going to focus more on the shot. I’m going to try and milk everything after the shot, I guess. I might do the USATF junior nationals (at Texas A&M, College Station, TX) because I qualified for the shot. Right now, though, I’m concentrating on Golden West. Hopefully, it doesn’t rain next week (Burroughs has had it rain in two consecutive competitions; state and Golden South). Otherwise, I’m going to have to throw in some indoor meets or something.

"At Golden West, there are going to be some studs there. East coast, west coast. 60 feet isn't going to do anything. You’re going to have to throw 64 plus to just make an impact at that meet. The California boys are just going to be coming off their state meet. Same with the New York and Pennsylvania kids. Everyone is going to be in tiptop shape. I’ve been off since the state meet over a month ago. I’m going to have to really tune in and focus on that meet.

"It was hard to stay in shape after the state meet. After the season, your inner drive goes down. It’s hard to maintain that intensity in that layoff over the month. During the season, you have meet after meet after meet. You look forward to things. After the state meet, you just take time off and don’t have the same intensity. You don’t go after it every day."

4 x 100m Girls
46.45 Oak Ridge New Track Record -- Oak Ridge, 45.93 at Florida Relays, got an unexpected challenge from Tallahassee Rickards. Through three legs, Rickards led, but a sizzling last leg by senior Lauren Austin sealed the win.

4 x100m

Evans 41.61, Olympia 41.68, Gainesville Striders 41.70

Heavily favored Olympia got a challenge from local rival, Evans.
Lined up in lane 7, Evans went unnoticed pushing to a 5m lead by the final handoff. Olympia’s Chris Johnson past the Gainesville Striders, but could not catch Evan who held on for the win.

3K Women
Jenny Barringer 10:02.27 New Meet Record
Barringer took it from the beginning. An easy win for her.
35(200m),400m 73.4, 800m 78.1 2:31, 1k 3:11, 1200m 3:50 (79) ,1600m 5:11.6, 2k 6:34.9 (83.3), 2400m 7:59.8 (84.9), 2800m 9:24.6 (84.9), 3k 10:02.27(37.2)

100m H

Simone Clark 14.18
3A FL State champ, Jenna Utecht, in lane 3, got a quick start and led through six. Then, Simone Clark of Rickards began to creep up bringing Hardy with her. Clark blazed away , equaling her season best of 14.18.

110m H

Andre Reid 14.35, Martez Brown 14.36

The Westside trio got out best leading through 8 hurdles. FL’s fastest Andre Reid, in lane 6, then came up over the final two hurdles to nip them. Coach Brown of Westside: “ We underestimated him.”

Andre Reid- Flanagan, 110m hurdles winner:

"I got a slow start through the first three hurdles, but I guessed I fixed it during the race and everything turned out all right.
It was surprise to me. I was really nervous because al those guys came in with better times than me and I came out on top. I guess I did something right.
"I always am back after the first 3 hurdles. I’ve been having competition the whole year because of that. That’s the first time I’ve run against someone who has run a sub 14. That’s been my aim is to run a sub 14. I’m hoping to PR at AOC and come out in the top three. I plan to run under 14 there.
" I’m going to FIU."

Girls Shot Put

Misti Barber-Miami, Carol City, Shot Put and Discus Champ"

"Once the ring dried, I was ok. In the shot put, I struggled a little bit. I guess I had high expectations from state. 49.... I felt I had to get a PR today. I’m content. God’s blessed me. I threw 43 feet. I think I made the World Youth team this year. I’m going to be going to Texas.
"I’m a senior. I’ll be attending the University of South Florida in the fall."

Boys Pole Vault

Ben Dickens- Stoneman Douglas Pole Vault Champ"

"I was running a little slow through at the beginning. After the rain and everything, it ended up pretty good. I started feeling a lot better in the end. I got some good jumps in.

"I’m usually pretty clean through the competition[ He had no misses until 16 feet]. There were a couple of close calls, but no misses.

"I had some pretty good tries at 16 feet. My goal now is 16. I tired it at state and I tried it here.
"I’m going to Stanford next year. "

Boys High Jump

Raymond Newell- Pearl, MS High Jump Champ:

" It wasn’t my best, but it will do for today. I had some tendonitis in my knee. I think I did the best to my ability considering my injury. Ever since my state meet in early May, I’ve had this problem. It still hasn’t gotten better so I may have to go see a doctor and see what he has to say about it.

"I know I still have 7 feet in me. I’m planning on going to AOC. I just have to compete with them.

"Yes, my coach is George Kersh [former 800m high school sensation]. He gives me a lot of good tips. He keeps me motivated and I’ve seen where he came from. I hope I can go to the same places he did. He’s from Pearl and I’m from Pearl too. We’re just two Pearl boys. It’s a very competitive city and when we got out for anything, it’s really strong.
It’s not big. It’s a pretty average size city.

"No[ about Coach Kersh talking him into the 800m], he knows my best event is the high jump."
