INDIANAPOLIS 8/13/03 – USA Track & Field on Wednesday announced its final Team USA roster for the 2003 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships August 23-31 in Paris, including the U.S. relay pools and a small number of changes from the preliminary roster initially announced on July 8.

Defending world champions from 2001 who return for Team USA include three-time champion Allen Johnson in the 110m hurdles, three-time champion John Godina in the men’s shot put, Olympic and world champion and world record holder Stacy Dragila in the women’s pole vault, three-time defending champ Maurice Greene in the men’s 100m, and 2001 world indoor and outdoor gold medalist Anjanette Kirkland in the 100m hurdles. All five athletes receive automatic byes to the World Championships from the IAAF, so Team USA will field four athletes in each of their events.

Silver medalists from the 2001 World Championships include world record holder Tim Montgomery in the men’s 100m, three-time world champion Gail Devers in the 100m hurdles, Savante Stringfellow in the men’s long jump and Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson in the men’s shot put.

Headlining the 2001 bronze medalists coming back is 2001 200m bronze medalist Kelli White, who won both the 100 (10.93PR) and 200 meter (22.21PR) U.S. titles in June. White is coming off a 100m win over current world leader Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas in Berlin August 10 and is a favorite in both sprints. Bernard Williams, the 2001 bronze medalist in the men’s 100m, won his first U.S. title in June and is among the favorites in the men’s sprint.

Other stars competing for Team USA will be five additional 2003 world indoor champions: world indoor record holder Regina Jacobs in the women’s 1,500m, U.S. indoor and outdoor champion Tyree Washington in the men’s 400m, two-time U.S. champion David Krummenacker in the men’s 800m, U.S. outdoor champ Dwight Phillips in the men’s long jump and three-time U.S. champ Tom Pappas (indoor heptathlon) in the decathlon.

Each country competing at the World Championships names six athletes to each of its relay pools – men’s and women’s 4x100 meters and men’s and women’s 4x400 meters – plus an additional two athletes who are already on the Team USA roster. The full, eight-person men’s 4x100m pool is John Capel, Jon Drummond, Maurice Greene, J.J. Johnson, Coby Miller, Tim Montgomery, Darvis Patton and Bernard Williams; the 4x400 is Derrick Brew, James Davis, Calvin Harrison, Bershawn Jackson, Mitch Potter, Adam Steele, Tyree Washington and Jerome Young.

In women’s relays, the eight-person 4x100 pool includes Angela Daigle, Gail Devers, Torri Edwards, Chryste Gaines, Inger Miller, Kelli White, Angela Williams and Lauryn Williams; the 4x400 is composed of Me’Lisa Barber, Julian Clay, Crystal Cox, Jearl Miles-Clark, Sanya Richards, Moushaumi Robinson, De’Hashia Trotter and Demetria Washington.

Athletes who were previously announced as on the roster, but who have declined their spots on the U.S. team, are Shelia Burrell, women’s heptathlon (recovering from knee injury suffered before the USA Championships); Marla Runyan, women’s 5,000m (lingering fatigue since USA Championships); Nicole Teter, women’s 800m (continued recovery from a nagging foot injury); and Michelle Rohl, women’s 20 km walk (hip injury). In the men’s 800, Jonathan Johnson of Texas Tech has opted not to compete in Paris. Taking his place is 2003 NCAA champion Sam Burley of Penn, who placed 6th at the USA Championships and is the next-highest finisher with the IAAF “A” standard. Runyan will be replaced by three-time NCAA champion Lauren Fleshman of Stanford in the women’s 5,000 meters; taking Rohl’s place in the race walk is 2002 USA champion Joanne Dow.

Head coaches for the World Championships are Angie Taylor (women) and Bubba Thornton (men). Head managers are Judy Harrison (women) and Larry James (men).

The United States names to its World Championships team the top three finishers in each event at the 2003 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Verizon (June 19-22 at Stanford) who have achieved the IAAF “A” qualifying standard by August 13, 2003. In most cases, this is the top three finishers overall.

If the U.S. champion in an event has achieved only the “B” standard and two or more competitors at the USA Championships have the “A” standard, those athletes with the “A” standard were selected to the team. If the champion has the “B” standard but only one athlete in the field at USA Outdoors has achieved the “A” standard, then the champion (or next-highest finisher who has the “B” standard, and accepts the position) was selected to the team.
