Shana Cox 37.59 breaks national record

by John Dye

"I just wanted to get my record back up outside," Shana Cox said after shattering Natasha Hastings' year-old national indoor record of 37.77. She was referring to the big board which shows all time Armory records. But in this event the Armory record and the national record are the same, so it took a new national record to win back the Armory record. Cox put her name on the board at this meet last year with a 38.00 meet record, only to see Hastings supplant her later in the season with her national record effort.

William Penn PA star Juanita Broaddus led the first time past the finish line, but Cox overpowered her on the back stretch and pulled away to the record, with Broaddus finishing in 38.44.

Cox basked in the glow of the record afterward.
