Seeded Girls - the finish

by John Dye

1. Ari Lambie
Bromfield Harvard MA sr

Last year, Lambie concentrated on team goals, anchoring Bromfield's strong relay teams (4x800 champion of the Nike Indoor Classic). This year, she pasted individual goals on the wall -- primarily Foot Locker national finals.

"I'm thrilled it came true," Lambie said.

How does it feel to be a favorite in San Diego, after beating one of the top favorites, Nicole Blood?

"I'm nervous, but I'm having fun."

2. Nicole Blood
Saratoga NY freshman

After her first loss of the season (other than the DNF in the New York PSHSAA meet when she took a wrong turn and went a mile off course), Blood still had her perky smile.

"I'm real excited to go to San Diego," she said. Her expectations coming in today? "Do the best I can." Her expectations for San Diego? "Do the best job I can."

Blood had a cold this week, but she refused to use that as an alibi for her uncharacteristic failure to cover Ari Lambie's big surge in the second mile. "Ari was just very strong today," she said.

Asked if she has a shot to win the national finals, Blood said, "Yeah, but a lot of girls have a shot."

3. Katy Trotter
Red Bank NJ sr

Katy and twin sister Amanda were far back in the first mile. "We didn't want to go crazy before the hills. We picked it up in the second mile, and I moved up to third coming out of the hills. Amanda didn't go with me. It felt like no man's land, I am so used to running with Amanda. I hope she trains with me for San Diego. She's such a great help."
4. Chantelle Dron
home schooled NH soph

The home-schooled Dron fulfilled the promise of her great times in open competition. See Stephen Underwood's story on home school runners preparing for Foot Locker. Chantelle's coach, Mick Grant, said the race went exactly according to plan. "She was around 35th coming across the plain and moved up to 3rd going into the woods. We were hoping for 4th to 6th and that's exactly what we got."
5. Meghan Owen
Killingly CT sr and
6. Caitlin McTague
Niskayuna NY jr

Connecticut champ Owen makes it to the finals for the second time. McTague follows up her second in the New York Federation championships.
7. Laura Cummings
Bay Shore NY soph

Cummings makes it three girls from New York in the national finals.
8. Sara Powell
Oliver Ames MA sr

Sara collapsed at the finish line and had to be carried away, just as her older brother Andy, a 2-time Foot Locker finalist, did once at the same spot.

9. Angie Saterstad
Hershey PA sr
10. Jesse Mizzone
Passaic Valley NJ sr
11. Amanda Trotter
Red Bank NJ sr
12. Amanda Bodette
Middlebury VT jr

Saterstad told Don Rich, publisher of PennTrackXC
[Saterstad was kept off her high school team this year because she missed the first pre-season practice.]

I had a lot of support from my family and they all believed in me, and it helped motivate me.
My strategy was to go out and be in the top 30 at the first turn and by the second turn, have the top eight right in sight, and then work the downhills. The start wasn't what I expected it to be. I got out a little slow. And around the first turn I got caught inside and it was like a walk. Then I picked it up and picked off people. I had an idea I was 10th or 11th. I passed two or three on the stretch. But I went for it , and I'm proud of what I did.

I missed competing for a high school this year, especially at States, I really wanted to be out running with them. I would have really liked to run my senior cross country season. It's kind of a shame being a senior and not being able to run cross country for a fourth year. I could have been a four-time district champ and had a shot at a state championship.

I'm happy with what I did this year, and I proved to myself what I could do.

All the PA girls who ran with me today are really nice

13. Elizabeth Maloy
Loudonville NY sr
14. Kate Papenberg
Red Lion PA jr
