BOYS:

1, Fort Collins, CO

Holding out Noah Shannon and the rest of the seniors, Fort Collins took seventh Friday in the Sweetheart Invitational at Loveland HS with a score of 137. Will Everett (6th/17:23) and Bryant Mason (8th/17:30) were the top men. Along with many others in the region's top 10, Fort Collins will be racing Saturday at the Centara XC Classic, hosted by Mountain View. In light of the Centara extravaganza, many schools held out their top runners.

The course has been described as having more than 40 turns, mostly grass, but with a little sand and concrete mixed with a few short hills. Temperratures were in the low 80s.

3, Page, AZ

In Saturday's highly anticipated meeting of two storied cross country programs, Page was outrun in the last 200 meters and fell to SW#5 Albuquerque Academy, 50-53, at the Curtis Williams Invite in Gallup, NM. "We really wanted to win this one," said Page coach Mark Lomeland, "since we don't often get to race against teams of the caliber of Albuquerque Academy." Lomeland could have made excuses -- but did not -- as his number one runner all season, Donovan Tsinnijinnie, was slowed by bronchitis and ended up as Page's third man in 10th place. "Albuquerque Academy is a very good team, and my hat is off to them," Lomeland said. "They ran very strong and the race wasn't decided until the last 200 meters."

Nathan Lee led Page in 4th place, followed by Levi Lomeland in 8th, Tsinnijinnie, Javier Jim in 12th, Antonio Smith 19th, and Tomai Bitsoie 24th.

4, Rock Springs, WY

Both Rock Springs and SW#6 Judge Memorial were surprised by unranked Davis Saturday at the Orem (UT) Kiwanis Invitational at UVSC Soccer Field. Davis placed five runners in the top 15 with a pack gap of just 34.2 seconds to pull off the upset. Davis and Rock Springs tied in 5A scoring with the former picking up the victory based on having a higher placing sixth man.

Zach Reiter of Rock Springs was the individual winner, covering the 5,000-meter course in 15:58.1. He defeated Viewmont junior Kyle McKenna (16:14.9) by about 80 meters. Rock Springs runners Greg Griffith (4th/16:21.3), William Miller (9th/16:38.8), Dustin Gibson (10th/16:39.3), and William Parker (29th/17:08.1) finished the scoring. The 1-5 pack gap was 70 seconds.

Davis pulled off the upset with junior Jared Ward leading the way in third place in 16:17.0, followed by Patrick Hall (6th/16:35.3), junior Nate Inkley (12th/16:46.4), freshman Seth Gutzwiller (13th/16:47.1), and Seth Frischknecht (15th/16:51.2). Richie Whicker was the sixth man in 16:56.3. He was 14th among 5A runners, 38 places ahead of Rock Springs' sixth man.

5, Albuquerque Academy, NM

Ben Johnson and Dustin Martin used a 2-3 finish to power Albuquerque Academy to a 50-53 victory Saturday over SW#3 Page at the Curtis Williams Invitational at Red Rock State Park in Gallup Academy also would have been victorious in a dual meet, 27-28, using the Williams' placings.

Page was 10th ranked nationally and Academy was 18th prior to the meet.

"Now that we are in the latter half of our season, our team is clearly making progress towards being at our best for the upcoming championship meets," said Academy coach Adam Kedge. "Page is a solid team with great packing. This time their front runners couldn't handle the 1-2 punch of Martin and Johnson. They took command of the race early only to be caught by (Navajo Pine's Ryan) Nez in the last quarter mile."

No official times were available, but Kedge had the Academy runners timed in 17:57 for Johnson, 18:03 for Martin, 18:53 for 133th place Kyle Cooper, 18:59 for 15th place Erik Huaswald, and 19:01 for 17th place Beau Hilland. Sixth man Cal Armerding was 20th in 19:08. Academy and Page were so dominant they took 11 of the first 20 places in the 32-team meet. In that sense, it almost was a dual meet. The course was quite sandy and 3.24 miles.

6, Judge Memorial, UT

With a remarkable 1-5 pack gap of 23.3 seconds, Judge Memorial was an easy winner of the1A-3A breakdown of the Orem Kiwanis meet Saturday at UVSC Soccer Field, scoring 19 points to beat Evanston (WY) by 74 points. Judge was beaten in the overall race by 5A schools Davis and Rock Springs of Wyoming. Davis won with 49, Rock Springs had 53, and Judge Memorial 72. Fourth-place Orem scored 184.

Freshman Luke Puskedra, 7th overall, was the 1A-3A winner for Judge. His time of 16:36.6 was 10.5 seconds ahead of Utah's other precocious yearling Seth Gutzwiller of Davis. Nick Gaiten followed Puskedra in 2nd place in the 1A-3A competition in 16:38.6. The other scorers were Andrew Hirning (3rd/16:44.6), Jason Heckle (7th/16:56), and Eliel Hindert (8th/16:59.9). Other News

Seniors Race Ostler (16:56.8) and Daniel Urquhart (16:57.5) and sophomores Jason Palmer (17:11.6), Bryan Willoughby (17:40.4), and Michael Garlick (17:58.2) ran 3-4-6-7-8 for Orem (UT) HS to win the 4A title at the Kiwanis Classic in their home town with a score of 28. Lehi followed with 47 and Murray with 58.

Albuquerque, NM runner Kevin McNally set his second course record in as many weeks to lead Eldorado HS to victory in the Santa Fe High School Invitational, clocking 17:27 on the tough, hilly Santo Domingo Pueblo course. A week earlier he set the record of 16:25 at the Belen Invitational. Eldorado won Saturday's race over Sandia Prep.

Provo (UT) coach Phil Olsen reports his teams took last weekend off trying to get ready for the upcoming Region and State 4A championships. They are likely to be without national class runner Jared Rohatinsky who has had a lower leg injury.

The news just arrived that American Fork (UT) HS was the winner of the Sept. 23 Nebo Invitational in Spanish Fork, UT. Winning with a score of 27 -- Timpanogos was next with 67 -- AF was powered by Mike Felix (2nd/16:44), Jarrett Pulsipher (3rd/16:45), Geoff Harmon (5th/16:51), Bathan Lye (7th/16:58), and Tyler Jackson (10th/17:07). That's an impressive 23-second 1-5 pack gap on the 2.98-mile course.

GIRLS:

1, Fremont, UT

Coach Amber Tingey was all but glowing talking about her SW#1 Fremont team. The school may be in Plain City, UT, but the team is anything but plain. Following a comfortable 53-95-106 win over SW#6 Orem and SW#5 Judge Memorial at the Orem Kiwanis Invitational at UVSC Soccer Field, Tingey had high praise for her top five.

She was pleased with Cassie Ricks who won the 5,000-meter race in 18:37.8, some 45 meters ahead of. Samantha Gaffney of Judge Memorial. "Sam(antha) is considered to be the top runner in the state," coach Tingey smiled. "And Lexie Meyer had a great race." Tingey was pleased because Meyer is in only her second race after a bout with mono. "She looked great, considering her situation," gushed Tingey. "We are really excited to have Lexie back in the pack." Meyer was fifth man (woman?) in 17th place in 19:57.9. The praise hardly ended there. "Lindsey Slater ran a great race with an explosive last mile," Tingey said of the senior who was 15th in 19:53.2.

NOTE* Ricks had some help in her win over Gaffney as the Judge girl fell in the first 100 meters and hit her head on a rack and ran into a tree but gamely held on for second place.

And then there are the Chuggs, sophomore Jessie (8th/19:24.8) and senior Katie (12th/19:41.9). "The Chugg sister continue to be solid and reliable," Tingey said. "It's sure a lot of fun coaching sisters.

"We're running great and having fun as a team. This is a very close knit group and they are a blast to coach," Tingey said. "We are excited as we head into the region and state meets." Those are 10/7 and 10/19. With an 80.7-second 1-5 pack gap, led by Ricks while defeating the acknowledged best runner in Utah, Tingey should have lots more smiles coming.

2, Rocky Mountain, CO

No meet.

Assistant coach Mike Maher explains, "Rocky Mountain's philosophy is that it is very hard for high school girls and guys to race every week. So after big time meets like Liberty Bell and Roy Griak, we went back to training this week. We are trying to build for the latter part of the season."

3, Eldorado, NM

Julie Brasher, Rachel Velarde, and Erin Madden took the top three places to lead Eldorado to a runaway victory at the Santa Fe Indian Invitational. Brasher was clocked in 21:09, Velarde 21:26, and Madden 21:37. Laynee Valverde was 5th in 21:50 and Allison Bedonie 6th in 22:00, leaving a tight 41-second 1-5 pack gap on a 3.1-mile, rocky terrain course with several hills.

That adds up to New Mexico's top-ranked team and 17 points. Pojoaque was next with 80, followed by Del Norte with 111, Penasco at 141, and host Santa Fe Indian School at 154.

This coming Saturday Eldorado hosts its own invitational and will face 4A-5A ranked New Mexico teams #2 Gallup, #6 io Rancho, #7 St. Pius, and #11 Del Norte.

4, South Tahoe, CA (but competes in NV state meet)

South Tahoe hosted the Tahoe retro relays, described by coach Dan Wilvers as a "large, but mostly fun affair, that allows four-person teams to compete on a tough, hilly 2-mile course." ST is also preparing for Saturday's important Clovis Invitational. And after last year's early snow, Wilvers is likely to be praying it doesn't happen again this year.

5, Judge Memorial, UT

Samantha Gaffney couldn't overcome an early fall, hitting her head on a rock, and running into a tree, so she suffered a rare defeat (by Fremont's Cassie Ricks). Her Judge Memorial team was still an easy winner in the 1A-3A scoring of the Orem Kiwanis Invitational at UVSC Soccer Field.

Running without two of the top five, Judge parlayed a 1-3-4-6-8 finish into a winning score of 22, well ahead of Wasatch (50) and Grand County (76). Missing the two girls, Judge was unable to handle SW#6 Orem in the overall race, losing by 11 points, 95-106, behind Fremont's winning 53.

6, Orem, UT

Home team Orem was an easy winner of the 4A girls title at the Kiwanis Invitational at UVSC Soccer Field, beating East by 30 points with a score of 21. Better yet for Orem, it edged SW#5 Judge Memorial in the overall race, taking second to SW#1 Fremont (53) with a score of 95, 11 less than Judge.

Orem has only one senior in the lineup, Kate Harline. On the 4A scoring, she was third in 19:35.6. Sophomore Krystal Harper and freshman Kendy Christensen led the way in the first two places with times of 19:00.0 and 19:32.0. Sophomore Sarah Bartlett was four for the team (7th/20:57.8) and junior Jamie Gee fifth (8th/21:02.8). Another junior Britney Wilson was sixth runner (10th/21:17.9).

8, Fort Collins, CO

The Sweetheart Invitational Friday was like the calm before the storm, the latter being this coming weekend's Centerra Classic which will match many of the region's ranked teams. The importance of that meet as well as the unusual Loveland HS course adjoining North Lake Park caused many teams to hold out their top runners. The course is said to have over 40 turns, mostly on a grass surface but also with some sand and concrete as well as a few short hills.

Running without its seniors, Fort Collins fell, 58-79, to SW#9 Fairview. Miranda Benzel and Alicia Holt led the Fort Collins effort in 3rd and 8th places, clocking 20:12 and 20:59, respectively.

And now everybody waits for the storm.
