Boys

1 Jesuit Tampa FL (1)-

Great American NIKE ROC
Jesuit finishes ninth overall and fifth best of the SE teams in the biggest race of the year.
Andrew Boza was third man for them through the two miles. Even as late as the two mile and a half mile mark, he was still in scoring position. But the weeks limited training and the muggy conditions took their toll as he faded and collapsed at the finish line. Ian Edwards was ab le to slip in for the 5th man postion, but it wasn't enough for Jesuit.

Top 5 time differential is the largest of the season.

had them finishing behind a superior effort from JR Tucker.

NE#5 Lockport edged out Parkview for second.

8 Tucker Richmond VA (8)-

Great American NIKE ROC
Tucker was simply stunning. Their top 4 averaged 15:56.5 and established a sizable cushion
over WP(16:20), Hoover(16:06.8) and Houston(16:31) top 4 average. Had Tucker's fifth man
run 17:19 or faster, they would have won the entire competition. There top five differntial was
the largest of the SE teams disproving the old adage that lowest top five differential wins.
Chapa, a lanky runner from Sudan via Kenya, went unidentifed for nearly two miles as he battleld Jesuit's Andy Biladeau. McElroy, Mathiang( another Sudanese and often mistaken for Chapa's brother because of the simlarities) and Rickey saved ran their best performance of the season over a moderately tough course.
Tucker came in wanting to prove themselves and came away with an impressive showing.

Brentwood Academy, TN, the #2 preseason ranked TN team, was steaming right along before running into SE # 3 Houston at the TN Classic on Sept. 18. There, BA suffered their only defeat of the season. Wins this season have included the UTC/Powerade Classic over GA's # 5 ranked team, Walton, GA. They'll try to get back on the winning track this weekend.

Others who will give a strong challenge from a trio of homegrown talent; Scottsboro,Mountain Brook and Smith Station. Scottsboro finished second to SE #2 Hoover at the Trimeet opener on Sept. 1. Scottsboro, last year's 5A state champs have won their last two meets including Cullman Invite last weekend. They are continuing to look strong this season. Mountain Brook, the defending 6A state champs, has improved since their 3rd place showing at the low key Scottsboro Trimeet. Last week they posted fine 16:53 average per man time at the Moundville, AL Invite to win with a near perfect score of 16. They return four from last year's state champs and look like they could again challenge for the title. They'll get a preview of how well they stack up this weekend. Smith Station came into the season with high hopes for it's young team. They finished 2nd at the Eye Opener in
Spartanburg, SC. They will look to do well against Alabama's best this weekend.

The boys individual race will feature some of the best individuals from three states. Brentwood Academy's(TN) Andrew Bumbalough is fresh off a TN state record and fastest 3 mile time in the nation of
14:36 set two weeks ago. He is arguably the best distance runner in the nation after his 13th place finish last year
at the Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals, tops of all returnees. He also won the prestigious Arcadia Invite during
the track season with a 8:49.87 two mile clocking, tops of all underclassmen last year. Walton's(GA) Sam Bryfczynski won early in GA and FL, but was third at the UTC/ Powerade Classic.Bumbalough won that race.
He rebounded at Clemson with a 10 second win. He is currently ranked #1 in GA. MaEachern soph Ben Hubers has surprised with a few victories in GA this season. He has posted several sub 16:00
clockings for 5k and should face a strong test in this tough field. He's is currently ranked #2 in GA.
Interlachen, FL's Jeremy Criscione finished a close second(15:38) at the flrunners.com V ROC last weekend. His season has been a series of ups and downs with the hurricanes and death of his cross country coach before the season. He has raced sparingly posting a win at the FSU Invite(15:59) before last week's race. He has the second fastest 3200m time in the field, 9:13.06 from runner-up at the 2A state 3200m track championships last year. He entered this meet only two weeks ago after learning that the second week of competition would be canceled.

Cary, NC Great American NIKE ROC

http://greatamerican.nationalscholastic.org/
The SE's best teams will be toeing the line for region bragging rights this season.

SE# 1 Jesuit comes in with three wins, two by large margins. SE#2 Hoover AL blew to a quick SE
region 3 mile best of 15:25 at the Memphis Classic to win over HL #2 W. Plains, MO and
SE #3 Houston, TN. SE #4 Winter park, FL registered a 15:28 team avg, 2nd best in the SE, at the Woodbridge
Invite for third palce over CA #2 Don Lugo.

But all team average times and statistics will go out the window this weekend.

Seven of the eight top ten teams each have a legitimate shot at winning the NIKE ROC team title, but
more importantly, for most, those seven will try to make a strong case for an NTN berth.
Jesuit, Hoover, Winter Park, and Tucker have a strong number 1 runner which will certainly help
in this tight race, but Collins Hill, Houston and Colonial can match them man for man through 4.

That leaves number 5 as the most critical person. All, but Houston, have shown some vulnerability
at number 5 this season. The top 5 time spread will also play a crictical role. The winner will most likely be the one
who can keep that spread at or below 1:00. The significance of the race may outweigh the difficulty of the course. Expect a championship type atmosphere as these runners fight for precious places over the final half mile up a will sapping hill and finish in the stadium.

Parkview is one of two SE teams which have a good number six and they will try to use that to win the title.

Oak Indian Mounds Park, AL Jesse Owens Classic

The girls team race should be a battle.

SE # 3 and last year's 5A state runner-up by six points, St. Paul's Mobile AL has not lost the entire season. They are led by one of the state's best runners, Tara Lenn.

SE #5 and the defending 5A state champs, Scottsboro AL won the early season Trimeet on their home course over Mountain Brook and Hoover. They have sub 20:00 team average times the last two weeks and are looking like state champ repeaters. They don't have a front runner like St. Paul's Lenn, but their top 5 was only separated by 26 seconds last year which was good enough for a six point victory over St. Paul's.

Mountain Brook, the defending 6A state champs, have been improving since their close second place at the Trimeet on Sept.1. Last week they posted a 19:46 team average to win the Moundville Invite. They could threaten the two higly ranked St. Paul's and Scottsboro teams with their strong running top four.

Brentwood Academy, TN, the top rated team in TN in the preseason and the DIV II runner-ups, return their top 7
from last year's team. They won overwhlemingly at the Mid Conference Pre State meet on Sept. 2.

Brentwood, TN, the 3A state champs, will be without top runner, Jill Skinner who will be running at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, NC. They have a good group that could factor in to the team race.
Harpeth Hall, TN and Walton, GA, #6 ranked GA team, will also be factors in the team race.

Individually, the girls race will feature the two best runners in Alabama.6A state champ, Laurel Pritchard of Vestavia Hills, posted the fastest time at the state meet last year. St. Paul's Tara Lenn, the 5A state champ posted the second fastest. 8th grader, Caitlin Chitwood and 9th grader Hannah Thompson of Scottsboro, frosh Mary Carleton Johnston(St. Paul's), Mountain Brook's Leslie Boozer, and Austin Jennifer Dunn could also be factors.

Cary, NC Great American

SE #1 has not been an ideal place to be perched this season. On Sept. 18, former #1 HTA lost to PJPII.
Then, Pope John Paul lost last week to Our Lady of Lourdes.

New SE #1 Lourdes will travel to Texas, but four SE ranked teams will race head to head while
another will try to make a statement in the small school's race.

SE #2 PJPII's Nicole Schappert is a threat to place high individually, but she will need her
teammates to cut the spread for them to have a chance. She has a good group that his improved in each
of their two races this season which started late because of race cancellations.

SE #4 Providence, NC has gone undefeated this year and has a strong five. They may be
vulnearble if CA transfer Danielle McNamara is held out. The defending state champions should still be
able to rise up for the challenge after racing on tough courses at WNCCC and the Seahawk Invite.

SE #6 Holy Trinity, FL has yet to put it together this season. 1A 3200m state champ,
Kayla Hale continues to run strong, but normal #2 and #3 runners, Chelsey Joiner
and Rebecca Zuhlke have yet to show the form they had last year. They turned the corner
last year at Great American so this may be the week for them.

SE #8 Collins Hill looked great in the first week with a dominating win at the Walton Stage Relays.
They followed that with a second place finish to St. Paul's at the Mobile Challenge of Champions.
At their county championships, they slipped by for the win. They'll be in the hunt after a week's rest.

SE # 7 Cardinal Gibbons, NC has been running strong and has moved themselves into great position.
They will be in the small school race for sanctioning reasons and will look to better the
performances of the other teams in the NIKE ROC that will follow their race.

Elizabeth Bruce Forsyth Country Day, NC- Has run right with Kate Niehaus, 18:09 to 18:11 at WNCCC.
She has won by large margins and run 18:20 through sloppy Seahawk course in Wilmington, NC. She's one of the

Morgan Schulz, Smoky Hill-FL finalist (11th)- collapsed this past weekend at her meet.

Erin Bedell Plano West, TX- FL finalist(25th)- She has the best speed of anyone in the field. She ran 4:47 off a 2:30

OLL will travel to Texas for a tough battle with SO #1Kingwood TX #2Highland Park TX, #4 Cedar Park TX, #7Georgetown TX and #9 Cinco Ranch Katy TX.

Lourdes will have to have it's hands full. Their best team average this season is 20:02 from
last week's flrunners.com V ROC. Kingwood won last week's huge South Invite by 20 points and a
19:20 team average. All five of their top runners broke 20:00. Highland Park is also very
comeptitive running a 19:40 average so far this season.
Lourdes will need continued improvement from their top four who have run splendidly so far this
season. Their number 5 will have to bridge the divide if they are to hang with Texas' best over 5k.
