5.Winter Park, FL-flrunners.com V, Tampa, FL
Winter Park wins against solid field on slow day at Ed Radice Park. Though flat, this course can
be slow on some days. 10-12 seconds on average slower than last year. Possibly due to the
softness of the surface caused by the rains over the past month and the minor change in the course.
Anguish has atypical race.
Hurricane Jeanne cancels school and practice Monday and Tuesday of this week for Winter Park.

Meet Previews - Boys

Tampa, FL flrunners.com V Invitational
Late Thursday afternoon, several counties threatened by Hurricane Jeanne closed school. Other S. Florida counties could follow. Hopefully, this will not be the case and all the remaining teams will be able to participate. Only Jesuit, FL and Washington, FL are missing from this meet featuring Florida’s finest teams. The outcome will have strong repercussions in the state as well as the NTN SE rankings. Winter Park, FL is coming off it’s best showing thus far with a 3rd place finish at Woodbridge Invite in Irvine, CA last weekend. Their 3 mile average was a sizzling 15:28.8, the second fastest 3 mile averaged in the SE (SE #2 Hoover posted the fastest, 15:25.71 at the Memphis Classic on Sept. 11). Looking healthier and stronger than the first month that was interrupted by hurricanes, the winners of the last three 4A state championships team titles will look to build some momentum this weekend. Winter Park’s main challengers will be up and coming and newly ranked, SE #10 Colonial, FL. Colonial pinned the first loss in 4 years to a 4A team on Winter Park, FL two weeks ago and won again last week without #3 runner, Javier Pagan. Their group looks to be getting stronger each week and should get a true test on the neutral course at Ed Radice Park. Several teams will look to spoil this highly anticipated match-up. Belen Jesuit, FL has been running solid times in S. Florida despite sub par performances thus far from Eddie Arguello. Arguello is the defending flrunners.com champion and ran 15:18.08 at last year's event; second best time to Ryan Deak’s 15:12
course record set at the state meet two year’s ago. Belen won their first meet and finished a solid second to SE #1 Jesuit last weekend at Spanish River. Conditions should be favorable this weekend with temperatures expected to be in the low to mid 70’s. Flagler Palm Coast, Bunnell, FL ran impressively last week to post a sub 16:56.48 team average and win at the Ridgeview Invite. They are led by super junior Justin Harbor, a 9:18.22 3200m runner and the 4A state 3200m champion. A host of new faces are showing some talent for the 2001 and 2002 3A state champs. Cypress Bay was a close second to Belen Jesuit the first week, but faltered last week at Spanish River. Naples won at Spanish River and looks like a contender for a top place this weekend too. Holy Trinity is another team that should be strong in the team race.

Individually, this race will feature the best runners in the state bar one, Andy Biladeau. This group of mostly seniors were highly touted as sophomores and are possibly one of the best classes in Florida history. Coleman Hoover(Winter Park, FL) sped to a 15:00 3 mile clocking last week at Woodbridge despite some foot problems that allowed 5 runners to pass him near the end. The 4A State champion has been the most consistent performer for the Park and has a strong kick(4:16 1600m speed) to be in the hunt for the title. Bryan Sharkey(Gulliver Prep, Miami, FL) missed some days of training before last week’s defeat at Spanish River. After the mile, he had nothing left and ended up a well beaten and very disappointed third. He’s recovered and will be back in the hunt this week. He was the state leader in the mile last year( a 4:15.76 at AOC) and his speed in the end should serve him well in what is expected to be a very close race. Sharkey was runner-up last year with a 15:20.07, 3rd best ever on the Ed Radice course. Jeremy Criscione(Interlachen, FL) could not get into a race last weekend after the UF Invite was canceled. He was a bit under the weather himself. He won the FSU Invite on Sept. 11 with a modest time of 15:59.66 on a semi tough course. He owns the fastest 3200m, 9:13.06, of anyone in the field and should be firing on all cylinders this week. Justin Harbor (Flagler Palm Coast, Bunnell, FL) won Ridgeview with a solid first outing(15:46). His best of15:45 on this course should fall this weekend putting him in the hunt for the title. Eddie Arguello(Belen Jesuit, FL), Justin Taylor(St. Joseph’s), Chris Mullaney(Bishop Kinney, FL), and Jeff Masterson(Mitchell, FL) should all be in the mix. All could better the 15:30 barrier which only three runners achieved at last year’s meet.

Conyers, GA Patriot Invitational
SE Collins Hill, GA will try to get back on track in the boys race this weekend. Their top competition will come from GA #8 ranked McEachern and GA#10 ranked Blessed Trinity. In addition, state ranked Grady(#7 in 2A), Greenbrier(#4 in 4A), Landmark Christian(#1 1A), Loganville(#10 in 4A), Lovett(#1 in 2A), Oconee(#3 in 3A), Pace(#7 in 2A), and Pope(#8 in 5A) round out a solid field. Individually, look for super soph and GA #2 ranked Ben Hubers(McEachern) and the Collins Hill duo of Jesse Marino and Nathan Frasier to battle it out. #8 Tyler Warren(Greenbrier) and #10 Justin Leach(McEachern) are two others to keep an eye out for.

Charlotte, NC Wendy’s Classic
Three weeks ago at the season opening WNCC in Hendersonville, NC, then SE #10 Spring Valley, SC surprised then SE #5 Chapel Hill, NC and unranked Myers Park, NC with a victory. The margin between the three was just 14 points. This weekend is the big rematch on the lightning quick, McAlpine course. Spring valley, SC missed last week due to cancelation and the other teams, Chapel Hill and Myers Park should be better as they get into the meat of their season.

Individually, look for Chapel Hill’s Jack Bolas, Spring Valley’s Reid Wilson to lead the race. Bolas’ 15:48 at WNCCC should transfer to a very quick time at McApline.

Girls Southeast Previews

1.Pope John Paul II -flrunners.com V(see mmore in depth meet preview below)
PJPII opened with a 16 point win over a depleted HTA squad under very hot conditions last week at Spanish River. This week, they’ll face HTA again, who will have Rebecca Zuhlke and Chelsey Joiner back, and a good Our Lady of Lourdes squad.

2.St. Paul’s AL - University of New Orleans
St. Paul's survived Hurriance Ivan last week. They return to action in New Orleans this week. Tara Lenn has recovered from a bad stumble at the Mobile Meet of Champions and will look to get back on the winning track before the next big meet, the Jesse Owns Classic on Oct. 2.

Providence took a break from racing last week. Undefeated, they return to action against some familiar foes.

Girls Meet Previews

Tampa, FL flrunners.com V Invitational
Unlike the boys race, the girls ROC will feature Florida’s best teams, bar none. Three defending state champions and three ranked team in the NTN SE region will face off in what will be a memorable race. Leading the way is SE #1 PJPII. Nationally ranked distance runner, Nicole Schappert won by 36 seconds over her teammate and nationally ranked miler, Jackie Areson last week at Spanish River. This one two combo is possibly the best in the SE. Behind them, they had a solid performance from an inexperienced and young crew. The performance of their 3-5 runners is critical on Saturday. SE # 6 HTA was not 100% last week with # 2 runner, Rebecca Zuhlke, and # 3 runner, Chelsey Joiner not scoring for them for various reasons. They will need strong performances from those two plus their 4 and 5 runners to offset PJPII top two and OLL’s 2-5. Expect a better race from last year’s consensus FL #1 team and SE #1. SE #5 Our Lady of Lourdes has posted wins at FIU/Lourdes and Spanish River in their first two meets of the season. The win at Spanish River came in a separate cooler conditions race than PJPII’s and HTA’s race. They registered the fastest team average time of the day, 20:24.4 bettered PJPII’s 20:33.6 by 9.2 seconds and HTA’s 21:05.8 by 41 seconds. Jillian Gill has been a welcome addition as have Sasha Mera and frosh Meagan Hoar. Another good run from Alexa Arteaga and a better showing from their #5 will be critical if they are to knock off two of the best teams in the SE region.

Other teams that could factor in to the team race are Bartram Trail(fresh of a win at Ridgeview), Episcopal( a very solid top three), The Bolles School( very talented and progressing), Oak Hall( another team with potential and getting better every week), Plant( good, but running with injured #1 runner, Brigithe Moreno), Wharton and Sickles.

Individually, Jenny Barringer(Oviedo, FL) makes her season debut. Barringer delayed her opener after jaw surgery kept her out of training for a month this past summer. The state meet and course record holder at 16:55 would be a sure bet to win if not for some formidable competition that has emerged this year and her lack of racing this season. This may be her biggest challenge yet. Frosh Emilie Amaro of Cypress Bay blasted a 17:58 time in her first cross country race ever two weeks ago. The effort had observers agape after she effortlessly pulled away from Copper City’s Jacy Kruzel, an 11:12.64 3200m performer, and a strong group of runners in the first mile to win by 35 seconds. Observers also noted that she looked as though she could go even faster. She could get that chance this weekend with the quick starting and front running Barringer battling with her the whole way. PJPII’s Nicole Schappert finished 2nd to Barringer at last year's flrunner.com meet with a 17:56.30 clocking. Her opening 19:04 was modest, but the ultra sleek Schappert was well ahead of the pack. Expect her to challenge the leaders this week. Others who could contend for a top spot are Areson, Kelly(Sickles),Alaina Miller(Cypress Bay), Audrey Allen(Winter Park), Sarah Hughes(Winter Park), Heather Marees(The Bolles School), Anna Greskovich(Pensacola Catholic), Emily Ingham(Episcopal), Kayla Hale(HTA) and Jillian Gill(OLL).

Running in the large school's race will be none other than Kerry Allen of St. Pete High. Allen was sidelined after last year’s successful cross country campaign which saw her take third at this meet and 2nd at the 4A State championships, and 13th at the Foot Locker South Regional Championships. Then, a stress fracture was diagnosed in her vertebrae and a brace was prescribed for the then soph who posted a 10:51.56 as a freshman to pin the only defeat by a Florida runner over 800m in Barringer’s 3 years of running. A second opinion resulted in less pool workouts and more physical therapy. By May, she was not using the brace and by mid June, she was running again. She has started slowly this season hitting marks of 20:00 and 22:00 in her first two races. Last week, she ran a road race and posted a promising 19:27. She's not phyically at the same point as last year, but she hopes to continue to improve throughout the season and participate in a full slate of races this fall.

Charlotte, NC Wendy’s Classic
SE # and last year 4A state champs, Providence, NC has been the dominant team in North and South Carolina. They’ve won the Eye Opener and Seahawk winning by more than 56 points on each occasion. This week they will face 4A state runner-up, Chapel Hill, NC who was ranked in the SE preseason poll. Throw in a slow out of the gates, Summerville, SC team, and we have the makings of a good contest on a super quick McAlpine course. Expect some fast times from all teams.

Individually, Kate Niehaus(Spring Valley, SC) is the class of the field. Niehaus has been near the 18:00 barrier twice the season on much tougher courses. Expect her to produce a much faster time on the McAlpine course where she has a best of 17:49 from last year’s Foot Locker South Championships.
