2002 Indoor Track & Field

Nike Athlete of the Week
presented by DyeStat

Week 9 - ending February 21, 2002

Kenneth Ferguson
Mumford Detroit MI senior

Mumford is making a big splash this year, and a big reason is the tall, smooth striding sprinter and hurdler Kenneth Ferguson. To get known, you have to travel. Last Saturday, Mumford travelled down Interstate 75 to Lexington KY for the University of Kentucky HS Invitational and came back with four victories. Ferguson was in on three of them: 60 meter hurdles, 400 meters, and 4x400.

In the hurdles, Ferguson rang up the best time in the US this season, 7.75, beating another hot pair of runners in US#2 Mike Loyd of North Carolina and Jason Hodges of Ohio. In the 400, Ferguson won by more than a second in 47.72, second best in the US so far this season.

Vicki Howard
Montebello Denver CO junior

Vicki Howard is the latest product of coach Tony Wells' sprint, hurdle, and jumps factory in Denver.

At the big Simplot Games in Idaho last Saturday, Howard was literally the only one left standing in a transcontinental showdown of power runners in the 60 meter hurdles. In the prelims, three girls dipped under 9 seconds -- Howard 8.76, St. Mary's Berkeley CA sr Danielle Stokes 8.84 and Bronx Science NY jr Fatmata Fofanah 8.98.

In the finals, the three came to the last hurdle side by side. Howard in the center had a slight lead flanked by Stokes on her right and Fofanah on her left. Then both Stokes and Fofanah tripped on the last hurdle and sprawled to the ground as Howard streaked to the finish a winner in 8.51, fastest in the country this season.
