Ponteen is the ace of Roosevelt's swift team which has conquered the New York Armory crowd in the sprint relays this season. Her third leg splits propelled the Maryland team to US#1 times of 1:38.20 (4x200) and 3:45.62 (4x400).

This week, Ponteen went to US#1 at 500 meters in 1:13.5 at the Prince George's County Sportsplex at Landover MD, one of the fastest non-banked indoor ovals in the country and site of the Nike Indoor Classic March 9-10.

at Penn Relays 2001

With Alan Webb graduated, Richard Smith has stepped up as leader of coach Scott Raczko's South Lakes VA squad. Last year, Smith was the setup man for Webb's anchors in record setting 4x800 and DMRs. This year, he is starring in his own right.

At Virginia Tech this week, Smith won a hot 1000 meters by out kicking Alex Tatu on the last lap with a new US#1 time of 2:28.10 (Tatu 2:28.88 US#2). Smith was also third in the 500 meters with a US#6 time of 1:05.85.
