Preview

Eastern Track
Vol.26, No.3-April 22, 2002
Penn Preview

Everyone’s (well, almost everyone) favorite weekend is finally upon us. All
that’s left is to pray for good weather (a liitle cooler than last week’s
mid-90s) and to run the races. Relays Director Dave Johnson and his staff
have once again put together terrific fields in almost every event.
Because of time constraints, I’ve limited my preview comments to the major
relays and some individual events, You can check the Penn Relays website for
more information.(www.thepennrelays.com).
In additon to the Penn Preview, this issue also contains oudtoor collegiate
relay lists, which include the leading teams from around the country who are
participating in this year’s Relays. It also contains the final Eastern
College and High School indoor lists.
Due to renovations at the Natioanl Stadium (in preparation for this year’s
World Junior Championships), the Jamaican scholastic championships, normally
held in early April,, weren’t held until last week. It remains to be seen
what effect, if any, this will have on the Jamaican runners competing her.
Missing from this year’s meet, due to illness, will be announcer Jack “Legs”
O’Reilly, the “Voice of the Penn Relays” for as long as I can remember.
Filling in for O’Reilly this year will be veteran announcer Bob Hersh, who
has been at the microphone for many Millrose Games, World Championships and
Olympics, but now finally gets a chance to work at the most important meet of
all!

and set a Collegiate Record of 3:26.98 at this year’s Texas Relays (without

but Texas(3:33.60), Seton Hall(3:34.19), Miami(3:34.21), and Texas Tech
(3:34.52) will do they’re best to make it a competitive race.

6:05 HS G Distance Medley Championship
EVENT #70--What a field! Boys&Girls-NY(A) set an indoor record of 1150.86 in
February, with runnerup Red Bank Regional-NJ(B) also under the previous
record in 11:51.54. Then, at the National Scholastics in March, Red Bank
lowered the record again, this time to 11:49.34, with Bronxville-NY(C) also
getting uner 11:50(11:49.61). Can Boys & Girls build a big enough lead on the
first three legs to hold off Red Bank’s Katie (or her twin Amanda) Trotter
and/or Bronxville’s Michele Rorke? Jamaica’s Edwin Allen(D), with Nicola
Maye on the anchor, could spoil a U.S. sweep.

6:20 HS G Mile Championship

2-miler in the U.S. and Heather Iatauro(#6-TriValley,NY). She may be a year
away from being a factor in this race, but keep an eye on soph Lauren
Centrowitz(#12-Broadneck,Md), whose dad, Matt, was the former American Record
holder at 5000-meters. Dad is the head coach at American University, which
will have strong teams in the men’s distance medley and 4-mile relays.
6:25 HS G 3000 Championship
EVENT #72--Julia Pudlin(#14-The Baldwin School,Pa), 6th in 2000 and 2nd last

rounding into top form at the right time. In this wide-open race, others to

summer’s World Championships; Deep Creek-VA(RO),

2:45 CO M 100 heats
2:55 CO W 100 heats
3:30 CO M Distance Medley Championship
EVENT #147--Often one of the highlight events of the Relays, this year’s
version should be no exception, with loads of contenders going to the lin.
After winning this event an incredible 16 years in a row from 1966-1981,
Villanova(A) didn’t win again until last year. Another streak could be in the
making, as the Wildcats, with an all-underclass team of Ryan Hayden, Nic
O’Brien, Jason Jabaut, and Adrian Blincoe are favored off their win at this
year’s NCAA Indoor Championships. (Hayden, Jabaut and Blincoe ran on last
year’s winning team). Stanford(AF) which was in great position to win last
year when 800 runner Jonathan Stevens pulled up on the backstretch, will
field another strong team, with a lineup that could include Don Sage, Gabe
Jennings, and Jonathon Riley. Jennings made his seasonal debut last Saturday
at Mt.SAC, running 1:50+ for 800-meters. Alan Webb was the star of last
year’s Relays, leading his South Lakes H.S. team to wins in the 4x800 and
dmr. Can he do the same for Michigan(AE) this year? Off his 3:44 1500 at
Mt.SAC(his first track race since last June), he may not be as fit as he was
at this time last year, but could still provide some excitement. Arkansas
(AD), which has won this event 13 times, went to the Drake Relays last year
but is back where they belong and are expected to contend for the win.
Connecticut(AG), with Dan Wilson on the anchor, shocked Arkansas to win this
event at the 2000 Relays, and Wilson and Elliot Blount, who ran 1:47.6 on
that winning team, are back this year. Abilene Christian(AB) led last year’s
race into the final stretch and could challenge again this year.
3:40 CO M Distance Medley
4:00 CO M 4x400 Seeded-top 25 teams are seeded into the first five races. The
eight fastest teams from all of the 4x400s advance to Saturday’s Championship.
EVENTS #149-#164--Last year’s Relays closer was a classic, with Florida
barely edging Auburn(3:04.22-3:04.27), and LSU not far behind(3:04.48).
LSU(3:02.70), Tennessee(3:02.14), and South Carolna(3:02.49) have all been
under 3:03 this year. making this one of the strongest fields ever going into
a Relays. Other potential finalists include East Carolina(3:03.59),
Auburn(3:03.84), defender Florida(3:05.14), Seton Hall(3:05.69), and
St.Augustine’s(3:05.80).

5:15 HS B Distance Medley Championship
EVENT #165--An Alan Webb-led South Lakes(VA) team ran away from the field to
set a Relays record of 9:59.66 last year, but this year’s race should be more
competitive. Haddonfield-NJ(A) had the fastest time in the U.S. this past
indoor season (10:16.60) and will be led by Chris Platt, who anchored his
team to victory in the dmr(National Scholastics) and 4xmile relay(NIke
Classic) on successive days in March. Others to watch in this wide-open race
include Scotia-Glenville,NY(B-10:19.29), St.Benedict’s-NJ(C-10:19.36),
Midwood-NY(D-10:19.95), St.Peter’s,NY(F-10:20.57), Bishop Hendricken-RI
(G-10:21.50), and Cardinal O’Hara-PA(H-10:22.74).
5:35 HS B Mile Championship
EVENT #166--Leading the way is Bobby Curtis(#2-St.Xavier,KY), 3rd in last
year’s race, who ran 4:08.29 for 1600-meters at Arcadia and 8:59.63 for
3200-meters this past weekend. A strong group of challengers include Shane
Stroup(#1-River Hill,Md), last year’s runnerup, Phil Gaeta(#4-Oakton,Va) who
ran 4:14.95 indoors, and Alex Tatu(#5-Thomas Dale,Va-4:14.95’). Marvin Pinnock
(#7-St.Jago) won the Jamaican 1500 title in 4:01.44 last week.

team, including anchor Kristina Bratton (fastest college 800 this
year-2:04.02) back for a possible 2nd win. Possible challengers include Seton
Hall(AE), North Carolina(AB), and LSU(AC).
6:20 CO M Sprint Medley Championship
EVENT #170--Florida(AA), with Rickey Harris leading off and Moise
Joseph(1:46.6) anchoring, beat South Carolina (AB-Otukile Lekote-1:46.8) in a
fast and exciting race last year(3:13.21-3:13.58), and both teams (with last
year’s anchors returning) are expected to contend again this year. Others to
watch include Auburn(AC) and Texas Tech(AD), with frosh Jonathan Johnson on
