Despite the presence of quality runners such as Laurel Burdick and Heather Iatauro, Molly Huddle turned this race into a time trial from beginning to end with margins that increased to 30 seconds at the end. At the start of the last lap, Molly's dad/coach Bob Huddle shouted for her to go hard because she could get under 10:20. Molly responded with a 72.9 second last lap, fastest of the race. Runner and dad were both excited by the race and what it portended: an end to the nagging injury (IT-band and achilles) that had slowed Huddle's training and a prospect of even better times ahead at the national meets next month: adidas Outdoor Championships in Raleigh NC and Junior Nationals in Palo Alto CA.

Saratoga NY had six runners in the race, but not their ace Nicole Blood, who scratched to rest for her race against Huddle at 1600 meters the next day.

Bell - Wigton sprints out
Andy Wigton

This was strictly a 2-man race between New York seniors Andy Wigton, of Greece Athena, and Frank Macreery, of Brewster. Wigton and Macreery ran 40-50 meters ahead of the rest of the field throughout, before Wigton sprinted out at the bell for an 8-second margin. The time was 10 seconds slower than Wigton's strong second to Brian Dalpiaz in the New York Armory in the winter.
