Big upset by 8th grader Nicole Blood

by John Dye

Huddle

After Elmira NY sr Molly Huddle's dominating win in the 3200 Friday night in the year's fastest time, her victory in the 1600 Saturday afternoon seemed a foregone conclusion. The only question was what number would she put up for the rest of the country to shoot at this season. But . . .

Eighth grade phenom Nicole Blood, who led Saratoga NY to the US#1 ranking in cross country last fall, scratched from the 3200 to be fresh for the 1600, a fact which became more relevant as the race unfolded.

Blood

At the start, Blood moved quickly to the lead from the outside stagger group, while Huddle in lane 1 became boxed in. Huddle extricated herself by going wide at the top of the stretch of lap 1, but Blood still led at the end of 400 meters in 72.8 seconds.

Huddle moved on top on the far turn of a slower second lap (76.1 seconds), and the crowd settled back to watch the inevitable. But Huddle, whose training had been restricted lately by an achilles injury, never put the hammer down. Blood kept hanging around, and sharp observors started remembering that she is a fighter in the home stretch. Also hanging around was Fayetteville-Manlius sr Lauren Heron, which is another story. Heron even moved into second briefly on lap 3, which Huddle led in 73.6 seconds.

At the bell, Blood and Heron were still very much within striking distance. Huddle seemed to make a move on the first turn, but it wasn't enough. Blood steadily reeled her in, and the top two were even as they turned for home. Blood won the stretch duel to finish in 4:50.9 to Huddle's 4:51.5. Huddle turned the last lap in 69 seconds, so Blood was a couple of seconds faster.

Heron finished third in 4:56.2, which set off a celebration by her family and coach on the rail. It was a return to Heron's freshman form when she ran 4:55.61 for second to Sara Bei in the National Scholastic Indoor championships in Boston in March, 1999. Two hours later today, Heron would run a strong third in the 800 in 2:15.28.

Huddle called the race "very disappointing." She would not accept an excuse that she could have been tired from running the 3200 late Friday and the 1600 early Saturday. "I've run both the same day, so that's not an issue. I just didn't feel right today."

Blood's win was an 11-second PR, but it did not surprise Saratoga coach Art Kranick. "You can't count her out of anything," he said.

Now we know.

Blood shakes Huddle's hand . . .
. . . and walks off with a happy wave to the camera.
