USA Junior Nationals

Men's Pole Vault

Tommy Skipper 17-6.5

Sandy OR jr Tommy Skipper wanted to wait until 17 feet to enter the competition, but the swirling winds made him be more conservative and come in at 4.95 meters, or 16-2.75. Even then, only two other competitors were left to jump with Skipper at the next height, 16-8.75, and Skipper was the only one left standing after that. Skipper then raised the bar immediately to 17-6.5 to improve on his US#1 mark for the season. He made that on his third try and then went for Lawrence Johnson's meet record of 5.51 meters or 18-1 by setting the bar at 5.52 meters. He came close on one attempt, but struck out. Skipper said the winds bothered him all day. "I didn't feel good at all."

Maybe next time.
