43rd Golden West Invitational

Shot Put

June 8, 2002 at Sacramento State University, Sacramento CA

Boys - Girls

Michelle Carter 53-0, Noah Bryant 67-6.5

Girls

US#1 Michelle Carter

Already the third best prep shot putter ever in the US off her 53-3.75 season best, Red Oak TX jr Michelle Carter was gunning for the national record (53-7.75 Natalie Kaaiawahia CA, 1983). She didn't get it, but she still dazzled an appreciative crowd of throwing fans with four straight 50-foot efforts, including 53-0, which tied for the 6th best throw ever by a US high school girl. The 53-footer came in response to Kelli Burton's 50-3, her first ever 50-footer. "That gave me a little push," Carter said. Burton got a second PR of 51-6 a throw later and the Davis UT senior was delighted to finish second to the national leader. Burton will attend Utah State next year, and Carter has another year of high school competition to get the record. Rachel Varner suffered a horrendous day, fouling six straight times a week after winning the California state championship.
