Ray Scotten IN 16-0.75
RALEIGH, N.C., June 14, 2002 --- First-day boy’s
action at the adidas Outdoor Championships at North Carolina State
University’s Paul Derr Track . . .
Pole vault: Ray Scotten, who arrived in Raleigh
Friday morning, cleared 16-0.75 for the victory. The state champion
from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, Ind., took advantage
of Tommy Skipper’s absence. Skipper, the year’s best
high school vaulter, got hung up at the Salt Lake City airport Thursday
and had to turn back to his home in Sandy, Ore.
Scotten, one of eight preps over 16-feet this year, outlasted John
Russell (Glendale, Ohio), who vaulted 15-9. Daniel Garrett (Chesapeake,
Va.) and Markus Langlois (Muskegon, Mich.) tied for third at 15-5.
“I just got here this morning,” said Scotten. “The
only thing I did well was compete. My competitve spirit was very
much alive. Every time I missed I got madder. I ended up pulling
it out.”
Scotten said nobody vaulted particularly well. Chase Shealy (Cayce,
S.C.), another 16-footer, failed to clear a height. “The track
is kind of slow,” he said. “I cleared the last two heights
on my third attempt. It was ten inches under my personal record.”
Scotten said Skipper’s absence was “kind of a relief,”
but added that he missed the challenge of going up against the nation’s
best. “I wanted the competition,” he said. “I
thrive on competition.”
