RALEIGH, N.C., June 15, 2002 --- Father’s
Day was about six hours away, but the fast heat of this event had
Curtis Frye beaming like a proud new dad in a maternity ward. Frye
watched from the stands as Kenneth Ferguson (Detroit, Mich.) and
Bershawn Jackson (Miami, Fla.) raced side by side around the turn.
Both Ferguson and Jackson will run for Frye next year at the University
of South Carolina. “Very nice!” said Frye. “Those
two are going to be a lot of fun over the next four years.”
Ferguson, running in lane six, and Jackson, right beside him in
lane five, were co-favorites coming to Raleigh.
Ferguson was the first to reach a hurdle. He and Jackson were even
heading into the curve, and Jackson took a slight lead heading home.
Both hit the next-to-last hurdle, but Ferguson recovered quickly
and finished in 50.55. Roy Cheney (Grovertown, Ga.) moved up for
second in 52.24, with Jackson third in 52.96.
Ferguson and Jackson
got into a furious foot race coming off the turn and both
crashed out of control into the next to last hurdle (below).
"We started sprinting and our steps got off," Ferguson
said. "I hit that hurdle hard." But Ferguson recovered
better and had a clear lead over the last hurdle (right).

Ferguson said he anticipated Jackson’s burst of speed and
was ready for it. “I knew he was going to try and make a move,”
he said, “but I was practicing for this with my kick.”
The time bettered the three-year old meet record of 50.72 and ranks
No. 7 on the all-time prep list. The powerfully-built Ferguson said
he’ll take aim on the national high school record of 50.02.
“I was trying to break 50,” he said, “but my steps
came up short. I’ll have it in the next few weeks.”
