Kerron Clement TX 13.63

Finish: 3 Kerron Clement, 4 Bershawn Jackson, 5 Dexter Faulk, and 6 Kenneth Ferguson

Kenneth Fergsuon (Detroit) stepped into the blocks looking for a hurdles sweep, and Dexter Faulk (Stone Mountain, Ga.), the year’s fastest prep with a wind-aided 13.48 had visions of victory.

But the two seniors didn’t figure on junior Kerron Clement's stunning charge coming off the final hurdle. Faulk was in lane five with Ferguson next door in lane six. The two were at the fore most of the way and looked even heading to the last hurdle.

Then Clements, the runnerup at Golden West last weekend, zipped into first in the waning meters to steal the race. His time was 13.63, running into a 1.3 meter per second wind.

Second was Faulk in 13.68 with Ferguson third in 13.78.

Prelims

RALEIGH, N.C., June 14, 2002 --- In heat one, (photo below) 6 Bershawn Jackson (Miami, Fla.) took the lead after the sixth hurdle and pulled steadily away from 5 Courtney Jones (Lancaster, Tex.). Through the first five hurdles, Jackson and Jones were even. Jackson won in 13.92, with Jones a non-qualifying second in 14.25. “I feel great,” said Jackson, a South Carolina recruit. “I’m ready to roll.”

5 Jeffrey Porter (Somerset, N.J.), a junior, won heat two (below) in 14.04 with Arsenio Corbin (St. Petersburg, Fla.) running a personal best of 14.16 to squeak into the final. “I can do a lot better,” Porter promised.

Indoor national champ Kenneth Ferguson (Detroit, Mich.) won the third heat (photo below), leading wire to wire and finishing in 13.73. “I could have done better,” said Ferguson. “I just have to work on my technique a little more.” Roy Cheney (Grovertown, Ga.) second in 13.92, and Josh Gattis (Durham, N.C.), third in 14.08, also qualified.

The fourth heat (below) produced the fastest qualifying time, with 5 Dexter Faulk (Stone Mountain, Ga.) winning in 13.70. Second was 6 Kerron Clement (LaPorte, Texas) in 13.81 with 7 Dermillo Wise (St. Petersburg, Fla) third in 13.88.

“I’m saving it all for the final,” said Faulk, who ran a windy a 13.48 earlier this year.

All marks were made wind readings of 0.0 meters per second.
