Adidas Day two - 800 Meter Medley
By ELLIOTT DENMAN
800-Meter Medley Relay (100, 100, 200, 400) – This event
is far from standard in much of America – but its potential
for excitement is obvious.
California’s Hawthorne High had run a hand-timed 1:42.0 in
1987 and state-mate Berkeley hit a 1:42.08 FAT in 2000.
So those were the targets as this event made its debut here.
And, yes, those records stood up.
True to its California roots, the event went to Woodrow Wilson
of Long Beach won it in 1:42.63, over Philly’s William Penn
(1:42.84) and Missouri’s Gateway Tech (1:44.24.)
The winning lineup was Dianna Gooden, Mackenzie Hill, Tiana Good
and Ashley Freeman, the same four who’d won the 4x200 Friday.
“I knew I had to get out there and do what I had to do,”
said Freeman. “It feels real good to romp in and do well,
a second time. We are going to keep doing it throughout the day.”
The second section (of three) went to Woodrow Wilson (this one
of Camden, NJ) too, in a 1:46.46 clocking. Uniondale, NY, won section
one in 1:48.74.
