Discus Throw – In flat air and no wind, record opportunities
in the discus were minimal. The top medals went to Marietta, Ga.
senior Ronda Gullatte (154-7), Lakeville, Mn. Junior Elizabeth Podomonick
(149-3) and Ovilla, Tx. junior Michelle Carter (148-0.) All had
done thrown far further this spring –including Gullatte’s
169-3.
Gullatte called it “a lot of (very hard) work,” and
credited her strong religous faith for the victory.
“I tried not to think of the competition, and do better than
before,” she said. “All the hard work has paid off.”
Encouraging his daughter, who placed third, and cheering from
the sidelines, was Michael Carter, the former SMU great Michael
Carter, who placed second in the shot put at the 1984 L.A. Olympics,
and went won to Super Bowl stardom for the San Francisco 49ers.
Carter still calls track and field his “first love.”
And it took no prodding by him to get Michelle into track. “It
was all her,” he said. “She’s really into this
sport, too.”
The discus is Michelle’s second best event. She’s
the strong favorite to win Saturday’s shot put.
