Kelly Willie TX 10.39

5 Kelly Willie TX, 6 Brendan Christian TX, 7 Ivory Williams TX, and 4 Shaton Palmer NC.

RALEIGH, N.C., June 14, 2002 --- Kelly Willie dethroned defending champion Brendan Christian with a convincing 10.35 triumph. After two false starts due to flash photography, Willie (Houston) and Christian (Austin) were running side-by-side in lanes five and six. Willie pulled in front a lttle past the midway mark, and put daylight between himself and Christian in the final 20 meters.

Christian, looking for his third career AOC title, was second in 10:44, with sophomore Ivory Williams (Beaumont, Texas) third in 10.56. Christian had won the 200 in 2000 and this race last year. He came to Raleigh fresh from a 100-200 double at the Golden West meet. His 10.20 in Sacramento is the national leader.

“I was running for a little faster time, but I’ll take them as they come,” said Willie, one of the nation’s best in the 100, 200 and 400. “You just have to stay focused and run your race. I felt some pressure because this was a good group of guys.”

Willie and Christian, Texas state champs this year in different classes, are expected to hook up again in Saturday’s 200.

Willie Hordge (Houston), a 10.3 performer this year, scratched from the final due to injury. Hordge’s departure opened a spot in the final for Kevin Merion (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Marion, fourth in the first heat, had the tenth-fastest qualifying time at 10.85

There was no wind for the final, which took place at dusk in warm, muggy weather.
