1st Annual UMES Invitational Gets High Marks

Though it was their first big high school meet; I was glad that
I had
decided to come. As were all the other coaches who traveled with
their teams
down to "The Shore" from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Like every other high school meet, there were highlights and low-lights
but
overall the meet was successful. UMES Headcoach Ernest Barrett received
high marks from all who attended and started an extremely busy weekend
off
on a high note (UMES also hosted a college meet on Saturday, the
next day).
The best events on the men's side turned in high U.S. rankings.
Lakeland
H.S. (Va) senior DeAndre White turned in a spectacular hurdles performance
running 7.53 turning back Suitland's Deyon Williams (7.76) and Frederick's
Travis Patterson (8.01). White's :7.53 ranks #1 in the U.S. and
further
legitamized the fast surface inside of W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The
Lakeland senior gave all in attendance a taste of his prowess by
skimming
over the hurdles in the prelims with a swift :7.60 beating Patterson's
7.68.
Noticeably absent was Woodlawn's Mark Mckenzie who had earlier ran
a :7.5
hand-timed 55m hurdle race on Dec. 17th.
The hurdles race seemed to warm up the track as Suitland's returning
state
champion Timothy Riley ran an uncontested 500m in a U.S. #1 ranking
performance of 1:07.68. Earlier, Riley anchored a victorious SMR
to a
decent 3:42 win and ran 3rd leg on yet another U.S. ranking relay
time of
3:28.31 in winning the 4x400. Joining Riley on the 1st place award
stand
were his Suitland teammates Jerome Hines (51'02.00 - SP), Keith
Ransom
(:36.31 - 300m) and Deyon Williams (6.26m LJ).
Not to be outdone by her male teammate, Suitland's Heather Langdon
won both
the 800m (2:35.13) and Mile (5:49.56) while anchoring her Sprint
Medley
relayto a victory (4:33.77). Woodlawn junior Jodi Benjamin showed
glimpses
of excellence by winning the 500m in 1:23.65 and then running excellent
legs
on her squad's 4x200r (:25.8) and 4x400r (:61.0). The ladies from
Cardinal
O'Hara in Pa. were successful in winning the 4x200 (1:48.77), 4x400
(4:13.62) and 4x800 (10:05.46). All excellent times and barely off
the mark
for US ranking consideration.
