LINCOLN NE 12/22/01 -- In its first year, the Midwest Indoor Track
Classic has landed the USATF Golden Spike tour. In addition to a
full slate of high school events, MITC will have nine elite events
including a men's 60 meter hurdles field worthy of an Olympic final.
The Golden Spike portion of the meet will be on national television
on ESPN at 4 pm Eastern, Sunday February 10. Meet director Chris
Lester said two high school events may be included in the telecast.
Golden Spike entries to date:
- Men's 60 meter hurdles
-- Olympic and world champion Allen Johnson heads an all-star
field that also includes training partner Terrance Trammell,
Mark Crear, Dominique Arnold, and former world decathlon
champion Dan O'Brien.Trammel was silver medalist at Sydney
in 2000 and 2001 world indoor champion. Crear is a 2-time Olympic
medalist. Arnold was NCAA champion in 1996.
- Men's shot put
- Adam Nelson, Janus Roberts SMU, Reese Hoffa,
Andrey Borodkin, Dan Armentrout, Jamie Beyer,
Brad Schneider, John Davis, and Marcus Clavelle.
In 2000, Nelson rose from #6 in the US to #1 in the world; his
72-7 PR is the ninth best throw in history.
- Women's high jump
- Amy Acuff, Nicole Forrester, Erin Aldrich,
and Carrie Long . Acuff has a PR of 6-6.75 and is a 2-time
Olympian and 3-time US champion. Aldrich was the 2000 NCAA champion
and has a PR of 6-5.5.
- Women's hurdles
- Jenny Adams, former NCAA long jump champion for the University
of Houston, burned up the European circuit in 2001 in the hurdles,
with wins at Zagreb, Lausanne, Paris, Nice and Stockholm before
finishing 4th in the World Championships at Edmonton. Joined by
Michelle Johnson, Vonette Dixon, Bisa Grant,
Sharon Couch, and Demu Cherry.
- Midwest Mile
- the first sub-4 minute mile ever run in Nebraska should come
from the stellar field of Jason Pyrah, Kevin Sullivan,
Bernard Lagat, Michael Stember, and Charley Gruber.
Pyrah holds the Devaney Sports Complex mile record of 4:00.46.
Lagat is #2 in IAAF world rankings for 2001 and Kevin Sullivan
is #15.
- Men's Pole Vault
- Lawrence Johnson and Jeff Hartwig. Hartwig, who
never cleared 15 feet in high school, is the American record holder
at 19-9.25. Johnson was the 2001 world indoor champion and a 2000
Olympic silver medalist.
- Women's Mile

- Women's 400 meters
- Monique Hennagan and Suziann Reid. Reid is a 2-time
US indoor champion and 3-time NCAA champion. Hennagan was a 2000
Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400 and was 1996 NCAA champion
in the indoor 400 and outdoor 800.
