FMR Track Club (Klein Oak, Texas) Comes From Behind - Twice

The FMR Track Club used a 58-second last 400 from Steve Magness and come-from-behind efforts from its whole squad to narrowly win the Greta R. Bernard Memorial 4 x 1 Mile Relay (boys).

Magness' kick enabled the boys from Klein Oak to post an 18:18.31, 1.13 seconds ahead of homestate favorite Kearney HS (Neb.). His 4:24 leg appeared to be the fastest of the day, just ahead of Kearney's Drew Tonniges. He was preceded by Frankie Flores (4:44), Paulo Sosa (4:37) and Gabe Gonzales (4:32).

FMR was only 5th after the first leg, with Kearney's Cory Wroblewski leading at 4:32. But Sosa moved the squad up to 2nd, then Gonzales used a vicious kick to take the lead in the final 150 of his leg. After a 63 start, Magness slowed down as Tonniges shadowed him then took the lead with 400 left. But Magness quickly retook the advantage while still saving something for the DMR later in the day.

"I was real happy with how everyone did," said Magness. "I didn't know if we could get the lead before the baton got to me."

"I started off about 50 meters behind," said 3rd-leg hero Gonzalez. "I was inching closer, then I decided to pick it up with 400 to go. Then with 150 to go, I really gunned it."

Sosa, who caught everyone but Kearney on his second leg, said the team would have something in the tank for later. "We want to take the national lead (10:31) in the DMR," he said.

Girls

North Kent TC (Rockford, Mich.) Teams Go 1-2

In their first big competition since a recent controversy (see Page 1 DyeStat special stories), the North Kent Track club (girls from Rockford, Mich. HS) dominated the Leanto Sparrows 4 x 1 Mile Relay, the first running event of the meet. The squad's winning time was 21:39.78.

North Kent trailed Marquette by five seconds after the first 5:34.5 leg of Kristi Powers (an 800 standout), but No. 2 runner Kelsey Toedebusch gradually made up the deficit. Her 5:19.5 gave No. 3 Michelle Harrold a comfortable margin to work with. (All splits are unofficial).

Harrold hit 5:32.0 for her leg, then passed to anchor Nikki Bohnsack. Overcoming recent ailments and mindful of two other races to come, she strode a 5:13.8 to cap the effort.

Meanwhile, the NKTC 'B' team pulled into second and stayed there, their 21:58.26 holding almost five seconds over Marquette. Lindsey Stebbins, the No. 2 leg, was the key with a fine 5:19.2. She was joined by Brittney Odgen (5:37.8), Amy Markham (5:34.4) and Laura Nelson (5:25.5).

Regarding the motivation of the NKTC girls in light of medication/vitamin dispensing accusations against the coach that has become a difficult situation for the West Michigan school, Toedebusch said, "It made us want to run harder, to show what we could do without 'anything.'"

A team philosophy of letting their feet "do the talking" has been "in effect even more," said Bohnsack, who has been overcoming challenges of her own with various illnesses the last few weeks. "(The infection) moved up to my nose," she said, "then I woke up Thursday morning with an ear infection. But it hasn't bothered my running too much."

West H.S., in fourth, was paced by anchor Jeni Frudden's 5:12.6, likely the fastest split of the day.
