As the girls lined up for the 3000 meters, the question was whether
the remarkable Bronxville NY girls (Michelle Rorke and twins Catha
and Caroline Mullen) could run the table with another 1-2-3 finish
(12/15 Bishop Loughlin Games and several cross country meets in
the fall). A new name, Elizabeth Maloy, Holy Names NY junior, crashed
the Bronxville party and won going away in 9:59.84, a meet record
and a PR by 32 seconds.
Maloy stalked Rorke for 9 laps before taking the lead on the 10th
lap and running away from Catha Mullen (10:16.04) late. "I
usually wait in the first mile and then just go and see what happens,"
said Maloy. It happened right for her this time.
Maloy, who was a split second runner-up to Saratoga NY 8th grader
Nicole Blood in the Brown Invitational mile last week, will now
return to the mile at Dartmouth next weekend to try to improve her
chances for an invitation to the Millrose Games mile. Maloy's 5:03.34
at Brown is the 3rd best mile in the country this season, and she
hopes to go under 5:00 at Dartmouth. Liz is rapidly making up for
a "lost" sophomore year when she was injured (ankle) and
suffered from asthma attacks. She uses an inhaler before races now
and is fit and rarin' to go.
