Brown Invitational

Pix Page: Girls DMR
Saratoga Springs NY wire to wire

Dec 28-29, 2001 at Brown University, Providence RI - a DyeStat on-site meet

by John Dye

National cross country champion Saratoga Springs NY transferred its talent to the indoor oval to win a surprisingly easy victory in 12:13.90. Saratoga took the lead at the outset and led throughout, although it was close until Nicole Blood put away A. P. Randolph NY anchor Selena Sappleton midway through the anchor leg to win by 23 seconds.

Start - girls break for the first turn

Winners - Saratoga team with coaches Art and Linda Kranick

jr Kirsten Hornbach gets Saratoga out on top in opening leg, but Colonie is still close in 2nd exchange as Ruby Solomon (right) hands off to Brittany Welch.

A.P. Randolph moved into second as the 1600-meter anchor leg started. Eighth grader Nicole Blood (932) broke open the race in lap 4 with a surge that Selena Sappleton (841), recently transferred from Murry Bergtraum HS, could not match.

Saratoga coach Art Kranick was pleased as he gave out splits to the winning squad.

Awards - top 3 teams pose with Olympic triple jumper Robert Howard, winner of the Brown Invitational when he was a Rhode Island prep. Second was A.P. Randolph 12:36.39 (left) and third was Colonie 12:44.47 (right).
