Splits: 1:11, 2:29, 3:50 and 5:03.25, all by Blood.
Nicole Blood, the 8th grade ascendant to leadership of the fabled
Saratoga Springs NY distance program, grabbed the lead at the outset
and then beat off a string of girls who took turns going for the
lead. The action started in the sixth lap when Phillips Andover
MA sr Melissa Donais, former Foot Locker Northeast regional cross
country champion, made a move. She got to second, but no closer.
Then came Gloversville NY sr Megan Olds, who took the lead briefly
on lap 7, but Blood responded and started the bell lap waiting for
the next challenger. That would be Holy Names NY jr Elizabeth Maloy,
who charged for the lead on the far turn and seemed poised to win.
But Blood never let her get by. The two girls ran side-by-side all
through a furious stretch run, with Blood getting the nod by 0.09
on the photo finish picture. The last lap of 34 seconds matched
the first as fastest laps of the race.
With Molly Huddle playing basketball, Blood stands on top of Northeast
milers this indoor season.
