Oakton Distance stars try 500

by John Dye

Oakton VA sr Keira Carlstrom was Virginia state champion in cross country and the mile in 2001. Oakton's Phil Gaeta, although laboring under the shadow of Alan Webb in northern Virginia before this year, has also distinguished himself in distance races, winning a regional cross country championship last fall.

Both ran the 1600 3 days ago at the Virginia Tech meet (Gaeta winning in 4:19.33 and Carlstrom second in 5:03.29), so they weren't going to run a distance race back to back. So, let's have a little speed work in the 500. All they did was win both races in US#2 times: Gaeta 1:04.5h and Carlstrom 1:16.5h.

Keira Carlstrom

Carlstrom passed Woodson DC sr Erica Johnson on the second lap and won going away.

Phil Gaeta

Gaeta set most of the pace, leading Wilson jr Marco Aguilar (green) and Lake Braddock jr Gilbert Elston midway and finishing with room to spare
