Boys - Girls
Brilliant future prospects took the limelight in the newly added
freshman mile races. Chantele Dron, Manchester Central NH,
followed up her upset of veteran runners in the New England Championships
(in 4:53.15 1600m US#4) with an uncontested 5:00.22 tour. Then three
boys beat the US freshman class record that had stood for 27 years
(4:23.9, Bobby Goss, Chelsea MA, 1975). Jeff See, Middletown
OH, and Andy Bilodeau, Jesuit Tampa FL, pushed each other
down the stretch to finish in 4:22.62 and 4:22.63. A few ticks later
came early leader Derrick Robins, Denbigh VA 4:23.84, who
was coming off a 4:20.97 1600m in the Virginia AAA state meet a
week ago.
