In what was arguably the strongest, deepest event of the meet,
Handley Winchester VA sr Bobby Lockhart toyed with the field and
won as he pleased. Lockhart is in training for the World Cross Country
Championships in Dublin Ireland 2 weeks hence at 8k, so this 2 mile
race was little more than a workout. But it was very significant
to him, his family, and his coach, as they remembered well losing
the mile here last year to Bobby Curtis on a last second lean. "He
wanted a national championship," said his mother, Cookie, after
giving Bobby a tearful, but joyous kiss. Lockhart said he felt very
strong, "I could have run 8:52 today."
1191 Billy Nelson set the early pace, but
1475 Lockhart patiently reeled him in by the mile mark. Trailing
here are Andrew Keino (# 8), Peter Meindl (behind Lockhart),
Shawn Kelley (behind Keino), Matt Keally (gold, on left),
and Chris Solinsky (maroon, 2nd from left). Seven runners
were under 9:10, and Ryan Deak at 8th in 9:12 got a PR that was
17 seconds better than his national freshman class record set in
this meet last year.
