Frequently Asked Questions
March 9-10, 2002 at Prince George's Sportsplex, Landover MD

Where is Landover, Maryland?

Landover is centrally located in Prince George's County near the University of Maryland (less than 5 minutes from I-95) and less than one-half hour drive from Baltimore-Washington International airport.

What is the facility, the Prince Georges Sports and Learning Complex, like?

It is a state of the art multi purpose facility including not only a track and field section, but also Olympic size swimming and diving pools, a gymnastic center, exercise and meeting rooms as well as learning centers. The track is 200m, state of the art.

Is there a place to warm-up for the meet?

Prince George's (PG) has a separate warm-up track above the main track and field areas with windows so that activity can be viewed while warming up. Additionally, the main track will be open all day for workouts on the day before the meet, March 8, 2002. (There is also a 400 meter outdoor track adjacent to the facility which could be used, weather permitting.

Is there adequate seating?

There is in excess of 4000 permanent seats specifically for track and field functions. Typically the meet has seen near capacity crowds, as the meet is exciting on almost every level.

Will I be able to view all events, including all field events, at the facility?

Yes. Every event is contested at the track venue of the facility itself. There are no off-site events.

Are there refreshments available there?

The usual refreshments and light lunch items are available at the facility.

Are the fields competitive and truly of national caliber.

There are none stronger. Consider the assault on the national two mile record by Alan Webb in 2001 and the classic relay battles between Boys and Girls HS (Brooklyn, NY) and Rockford, MI as well. The Nike Indoor Classic will continue to draw the nation's best fields.

What events are being contested?

The usual complement of indoor track and field events. And, new for 2002: Midget, Bantam and Youth 4x200 and 4x400 relays and a Freshman mile for boys and girls.

What about awards?

Championship medals go to the top six in each event. Championship rings are provided to each champion, including relay members. Additionally, Nike provides the Bowerman and Prefontaine awards to the winners of the Open Mile (Bowerman) and Freshman Mile (Prefontaine). And the top six in all events are named to the NSSF/American Track and Field All-American team.

Will there be any other functions besides the track meet itself?

Nike will be providing hospitality, interactive displays, seminars and socials. Dates and times will be announced.

Is there adequate parking at the facility?

There is a very large secure parking area (with attendants on duty at all times) with more than enough parking for any function within the facility, and it is FREE. There is additional parking at the adjacent Fedex field, home of the Washington Redskins professional football team.

How close to the facility are hotel accommodations?

All meet hotels are within a 15-minute drive to the facility.

Are the hotels and dining in the area reasonable?

All meet hotels have competitive rates and are below the normal rates for hotels near metropolitan areas. There are plenty of fast food and mid-range priced restaurants within the vicinity of each hotel. Most of the hotels have restaurants as well.

Will there be transportation from the hotels to the facility?

A continual shuttle bus service between the meet hotels and the facility is provided, including that for registration/packet pickup at the facility on Friday night.

If I am flying in, will there be transportation back to the airport after the meet?

The meet will provide FREE coach service directly from the facility to BWI (Baltimore-Washington International) airport during and after the meet on Sunday, March 10. Athletes and those traveling with them will be allowed to store their luggage in a secure room at the PG facility.

What about passenger train lines?

Both the New Carrollton and Greenbelt stations are within minutes of the hotels and facility, Washington Metro and Amtrak connections.

Is there media coverage?

The Nike Indoor Classic has typically been covered by major newspapers (Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today) and track oriented magazines. Additionally, dyestat.com, the nation's leading high school track and field web site, will be covering the meet live.

How experienced is the organization which puts on the Nike Indoor Classic?

Meet management, now of the National Scholastic Sports Foundation, has been putting on track meets since the fifties (nearly 50 years, that is). They ran the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships from 1984 to 1997, the Nike Indoor Classic since 1999, and the adidas Outdoor Track and Field Championships since 1991.

In what other areas are the National Scholastic Sports Foundation involved?

The NSSF provides support to selected high school and junior age meets in the U.S., and to the athletes who travel to those meets. For example, it has provided hundreds of youngsters with financial support to the USATF Junior Track and Field Championships, the World Junior Cross Country Trials, and is currently awarding nearly a dozen high school meets throughout the country with financial assistance. In essence, the National Scholastic Sports Foundation does a great deal more for the sport than administering the country's best two interscholastic championships.
