Ryan Hall 2001
Big Bear Lake CA

Alan Webb 2001
South Lakes Reston VA

3:53.43 ! - Need we say more?

Webb broke the magic 4-minute mile barrier in January at the New York Armory in 3:59.86, the 4th prep sub-4 miler ever and the first to do it indoors. Some said he may have peaked too soon, but he was just getting started. In March, Webb broke the national record for the indoor 1000 meters at the Virginia State AAA meet and ran the 3rd fastest indoor 2 mile ever at the Nike Indoor Classic.

All of this was prelude to the outdoor campaign, which peaked at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon when Webb toppled the most revered record in high school track: Jim Ryun's 3:55.3 mile. And he didn't just crack it, he smashed it by nearly 2 full seconds.

There's still more. Webb turned the Virginia State AAA meet and the AOC nationals into remarkable training exercises between the Prefontaine Classic and the USA Nationals. In Virginia, he rang up the fastest 800 meters of the year. At AOC, he helped South Lakes' relay teams avenge two earlier losses by beating Atlantic Del Ray Beach FL and the Jeffersons in both the 4x800 and the DMR, with Webb's sub-4 anchor pulling South Lakes past the national DMR record by 3.53 seconds.

A week later, Webb had the fastest 1500 meter prelim time at the USA Nationals and was on the verge of making the US team for the World Championships. More experienced runners won out in the finals, but it was the end of a glorious year. Webb's name went in the books alongside five individual national records (indoor and outdoor mile, indoor and outdoor 1500 meters, and indoor 1000 meters) and one relay record (DMR).
