With
14:43 win, Yong-Sung Leal is 8th best ever at Mt. SACLeal finishes
"I
wanted to beat Billy Nelson's time because everybody said I couldn't," was
the ready answer when a reporter asked Leal about his goal for the race. California
3200 meter champion as a sophomore last year, Leal was the pre-season favorite
to take Ryan Hall's mantle as best distance runner in California and possibly
the nation. He kept a low profile the first 6 weeks of the season, and when Billy
Nelson beat the best of the rest in California at the Clovis Invitational 2 weeks
ago some thought he could have beaten Leal too. That thought grew stronger when
Nelson breezed to victory Friday night in the small school Division
4 Sweepstakes in 14:48, a top 10 mark for the 54 years of Mt. SAC cross country.
Leal gave credit to runner-up Carl Dambkowski and 5th place Jordan Horn
for pushing the pace. Leal also saw the race as valuable preparation for
the Foot Locker West regional here on December 1."Last year, I went out too
slow and got boxed in. This time, I sprinted out in the first 400 meters to get
clear," Leal said. So Leal should be ready come December 1. And Billy Nelson
too. Arroyo jr Yong-Sung Leal 14:43 Granada sr Carl
