Nike Unveils New Cross Country Service Stations
to 5,000 Top High School Runners
Charlotte, NC-September 20, 2001-The Great American Cross Country
Festival
will feature 670 high school teams at Winthrop Farm Meadows in Rock
Hill,
S.C. near Charlotte, N.C. this weekend. The meet will kick off Friday
evening and continue through Saturday, September 22.
Two-time Olympian and Nike athlete, Bob Kennedy (3,000m, 5,000m,
10,000m) will be in attendance showing his support for high school
cross country running. Kennedy is the
American record-holder at 3,000 meters (7:30.84, Monaco '98) and
5,000
meters (12:58.21, Zurich '96).
Nike will unveil its new "Cross Country Service Stations"
at the event.
These vehicles will travel to cross country meets nationwide, allowing
students to witness Nike's history and product first-hand. "Our
goal,"
says Josh Rowe, Nike's Youth Running Manager, "is to inspire
young
athletes by giving them a hands-on experience with Nike's long Running
history, while offering important services such as spike replacement
and
beverages."
In it's third year, the Great American Cross Country Festival added
the
Great Race of the Great Bay in San Francisco to the event program
for
September 8, 2001. The Festival continues this weekend with nearly
5,000
top runners entering one of 23 races.
"Nike is thrilled to have been a sponsor of this event since
its
inception," explains Rowe, "because this is truly the
greatest gathering
of cross country competition at a high school event."
Nike, Inc., headquartered in Beaverton, Ore., markets its products
in more
than 100 countries and is the world's leading sports and fitness
company.
