Amber Trotter has another training run

WALNUT CA 12/1/01 - There were two races here today in the girls seeded competition. There was Amber Trotter (above and right) , and then there was the rest of the 132 girl field.

As in every race this year, Trotter grabbed the lead early and never looked back. This time, Trotter already had daylight after 100 meters. The lead was 20 seconds as she passed the mile mark in 5:08, and it grew to 43 seconds when she hit the finish line with the clock showing 17:14. Trotter did not look all out as she entered the stadium for the last 300 meters that lengthened the distance to 5k. At the shorter 2.91 mile distance in October she ran 16:16 to destroy the course record in the 58th running of the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Now Trotter heads for Disney World at Orlando FL (Foot Locker national finals next Saturday December 1) to see if the other regions pose any more threat than the West has this year.

Behind Trotter, there was an interesting group of qualifiers for Orlando.

Rejuvenated Gallup NM sr Felicia Guliford (right) won the second "race" handily in 17:57. She was a Foot Locker finalist as a freshman and sophomore before suffering a series of late race collapses that put her career in eclipse for a year. Fourth at Orlando as a freshman in 1998, Felicia led the 1999 race into the home stretch before staggering through the last 150 meters and falling back to fifth. Reported to be caused by asthma, the attacks stopped as mysteriously as they began, and Felicia has been healthy and happy since last spring, when she won the Great Southwest 1600 with a strong finishing kick. This fall she won her fourth straight New Mexico cross country championship.

Third and fourth were mild surprises: Julie Allen CA, who was only 10th fastest in the California state meet last week, and Jackie Zeigle UT, who was 24 seconds behind twin sister Laura at the Utah state meet (Laura, a 2000 finalist, dropped out after 2 miles today).

After Utah 4A champ Amber Harper was 5th, there came two Montana girls who had a fierce dual in their state meet with the opposite order -- Heidi Lane of Great Falls and previously unbeaten Flathead Kalispell freshman Zoe Nelson. Rounding out the qualifiers was Sally Meyerhoff AZ, with a 14-second margin over 9th place Ruth Graham CA.

Trotter was the only one of four returning West regional finalists to qualify this year, as 2000 finalists Liza Pasciuto CA, Laura Zeigle UT (Jackie's twin), and Clara Horowitz CA missed the cut this year. Both Zeigle and Pasciuto dropped out, and Horowitz was 14th. There were still two Zeigles finishing, however, as little sister Kit, a freshman, finished 36th.
