2. Nikki Bohnsack MI

Nikki says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had finished second and were going to Orlando? Was it a surprise to be that high, or something you were shooting for all year?

I was so excited! I didn't know how well I would do, but I was sure hoping to go to Florida. I was shooting to make it to nationals, but not to win or to even place in the top three. It was a great surprise.

2. Was Foot Locker Regional the best race of your year (bad conditions, I know)? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

I think it was one of my better races, but I think that my state meet was my best race ever. The course was slow and muddy at state, but I won by over 30 seconds. The Foot Locker Midwest course is always a challenge, but the mud and wind made it even harder.

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

My coach is Brad Prins and he basically works me until I no longer can move. We had an extremely hard hill workout and many tempos two weeks before my regional. This past week was the hardest training week of my life and after each practice I felt like I was about to fall over. But it all pays off in the end.

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to get in the top 10 or better?

My goal is to be in the top ten and to run a smart race. It would be great to PR, too! I think I will need to run a consistent race and not push the pace too early. Also, I hope that the heat doesn't factor in too much.

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

They are my mom and dad, my coach and my girls. The girls help me so much on my runs and we have so much fun together. I love them!! I hate running without them.

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

I love soccer and volleyball, I am an active participant in my youth group at church and I love hanging out with my friends.

4. Kristin Roth OH

Kris says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had finished in fourth and were going to Orlando? Was it a surprise, or something you were shooting for all year?

I wasn't going into the race with too high of expectations because I knew it was a very competitive field and this was my first time racing in the regional meet. I was so-o-o ecstatic when I crossed the line!

2. Was Foot Locker Regional your best race of the year? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

My time wasn't a PR, but this rough course dictated that, and I felt great running against the best group of runners I've faced all year.

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

Early season, I wasn't pounded with high mileage and hard workouts, so I didn't peak too soon at all. Coach Otten has been helping me postseason with beneficial workouts.

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to get All-American, top 10 or better?

My goals for this race is to be at my highest confidence. This is such a prestigious race with wonderful and competitive runners, so I plan to take advantage of the moment and run my heart out ...who knows where I'll place.

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

A good friend, Ron Hoskins; Mr. Otten and Lore Long (coaches), my supportive parents who keep me balanced during rough times, my teammates and friends who always encourage me! My fav elite athlete is Laurie (Gomez) Henes. Go Pack!

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

I love to draw in my spare time, sometimes writing, any physical activity like swimming, soccer, etc. I guess I just like being outside … oh yeah … eating and sleeping.

5. Jessica Gall IN

Jessica says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had finished in the top eight and were going to Orlando? Was it a surprise, or something you were shooting for all year?

It was a relief to finish the regional meet in the top 8; a real weight off my shoulders because it had been a goal of mine ever since I didn't make it last year. As a high school cross country runner, there is no bigger prize than going to Footlocker Nationals.

2. Was Foot Locker Regional the best race of your year? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

No, it wasn't. My best race of the year was the Indiana State Meet. I went out at a conservative pace and let the other runners wear out in the front. I felt comfortable the whole way and with 600m to go (it was a 4k race) started to kick and ended up pulling away and winning. After the race, I felt pretty good, so I know I could've gone even faster.

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

I play soccer and run cross country in the fall, so I did a lot of cross training and not a lot of straight up big mileage. I ran in the mornings (around 35 miles a week), usually three to four hard days a week (including meets), and then would go to soccer practice after school and to soccer games after meets on the weekends (that was my speed work). My distance workouts were always intervals, i.e. mile repeats and pyramids.

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to get All-American?

My goal is to PR for 5k and to make a splash on the national scene. Girls from Indiana have a hard time getting national attention because unfortunately we only run 4k, so I would like to represent my state well. To be All-American, I just need to go out at a decent pace and not worry if the others go out fast, hang tough in the middle, and leave everything I have on the course.

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

My coach, Steve Lewark, made me believe I could be a successful distance runner and I owe so much to him for that. My family has also always been supportive and encouraged me to participate in sports. My favorite elite runner would have to be Bob Kennedy because he's an Indiana grad. Go Hoosiers!

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

I like to play soccer, swim, go to the movies, take pictures and just hang out with my friends.

6. Megan Kaltenbach CO

Megan says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had finished sixth and were going to Orlando? Was it in line with what you had expected, given racing for this year?

I was really excited I knew that all that mattered this race was qualifying and I was just relieved that I had made it again! I mean with sooo many girls in the race at Midwest, if you slip up a little and don't have a good race, its very difficult to place top 8 - so I was just very excited to be going again. It's such a great experience and fun weekend!

2. Tell us about your best race of the year and how the fall has gone in general.

This season was new and different, all because I quit soccer this year and so instead of running only three days a week, now I run six. I definitely felt all the running in the beginning and I now know what it is like to run with tired legs, but I think it really pays off at the end of the season because you feel so much stronger! My best race this year was probably Northglenn. I broke the course record held by a great runner and I ran a 17.46, feeling very strong!

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you get to Orlando.

My coaches are the best and they help so much with my running, but this season we just concentrated on staying healthy for Wisconsin and peaking at the right time. Plus, the extra miles from quitting soccer contributed a lot!

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to improve on 18th last year ...or get to the kind of form you ran 10:11 with last spring?

Well, I have to be smart on Saturday and just run my own race. I always set my goals high and hopefully this weekend I will reach them and run smart, which is the key for me.

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

My parents and my sister help so much with everything they support me in everything I do and they always have a good word for me! My friends are so helpful too they always keep me calm before the race! My boyfriend Bryan is an awesome runner and he always has great input and always gets me pumped up before the race! Plus my coaches are the best! They know so much about running. I trust them and get along with them so well, which is really nice and helps me a lot!

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

I like spending time with my family, I love going out on the weekends and hanging out with my friends, and I also just like playing any sports, especially soccer!

7. Angela Homan OH

Angela says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had finished in the top eight and were going to Orlando? Was it a surprise, or something you were shooting for all year?

When I realized I had finished in the top 8 and was going to Orlando, I felt great because this was something I was shooting for the whole year - to compete at the National Level!

2. Was Foot Locker Regional the best race of your year? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

The Footlocker Regional in Wisconsin was not my best race of the year, but certainly, with 408 runners and all the mud it was the most interesting and fun run I ever did! My best or favorite race was the race I trained for and that was state. My goal last summer was to start training earlier than usual, build a base, and run consistently every time out. By the time state came, my coach gave me a plan for running the first mile 10 seconds slower than last years 5:20 and work on even splits thereafter. Things obviously went very well as I won with a 17:53.

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

My coach Brian McMichel has been the coach at my High School for the last 30 years and with his coaching experience he has brought many successes to the XC program at Spencerville. Since state he has continued to put his time into my training. As for training elements that have helped me to improve - - really there hasn't been anything different; because running at this level is as new for him as it is for me and I guess one just prepares with the same training that got you there.

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to get All-American or better?

My goal for Saturday is to place in the top 15. For myself to get All-American or better I am going to have to stay with the lead pack and finish strong.

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

My parents and coach Brian McMichael are the most important influence in my running life -- my parents for always supporting me and coach for teaching me the value of working hard in practice. One way or another hard work always seems to pay off!

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

My biggest interest outside of running is being involved in my school. I am pretty busy with student council, National Honor Society, SADD, Yearbook and being Senior Class Vice President. Besides running, I love to help others and take part in many different activities -- which makes me a more rounded person.
